ENGINEERING
Definition: Engineering is the application
of scientific principles to design or develop
structures, equipment, or processes. The
main branches of engineering include
electrical engineering, mechanical
engineering, chemical engineering, civil
engineering, aerospace engineering,
automotive engineering, and computer
engineering. A person who practices
engineering is called an engineer.
Wikipedia
Engineering is the discipline, art and
profession of acquiring and applying
scientific, mathematical, economic,
social, and practical knowledge to design
and build structures, machines, devices,
systems, materials and processes that
safely realize a solution to the needs of
society.
Britannica
Engineering
Professional art of applying science to the
optimum conversion of the resources of nature
to the uses of humankind.
Engineering is based principally on physics,
chemistry, and mathematics and their
extensions into materials science, solid and
fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, transfer and
rate processes, and systems analysis.
aerospace engineering, civil engineering,
chemical engineering. genetic engineering,
mechanical engineering, military engineering.
Etc etc.
ETHICS
Ethics
The science of human duty; the body of
rules of duty drawn from this science; a
particular system of principles and rules
concerting duty, whether true or false;
rules of practice in respect to a single
class of human actions; as, political or
social ethics; medical ethics.
Wikipedia
Ethics (also known as moral
philosophy) is a branch of philosophy
that addresses questions about morality
that is, concepts such as good and evil
, right and wrong, justice, virtue, etc.
What is a Code of Ethics
Code of ethics provide a framework for
ethical judgment for a professional.
Note the keyword, framework.
No code of ethics can cover all aspects
and all possible ethical situations that a
professional engineering is likely to
encounter.
Rather, they serve as a starting point.
What Code of Ethics is Not!
It is not a recipe for ethical behavior
rather its just a framework.
It is not a legal document
It is not a substitute for sound judgment.
One cant be arrested for violating its
provisions, although expulsion from the
professional society might result from
code violations.
It does not create new morals or ethical
principles.
What is a Code of Ethics
Its spells out the ways in which moral and
ethical principles apply to professional
practice.
It helps the engineer to apply moral
principles to the unique situations
encountered in professional practice.

"Allah commands you to render (give) back

your trust to those to whom they are,
and that when you judge between
people, you judge with justice. Allah
admonishes (warn-abt) you with what is
excellent."

"Give full measure and weight justly and

defraud (cheat) not men of their things, and
act not corruptly in the land, making
mischief." (harm)

"And let not hatred of a people

incite (provoke/motivate) you not to act
equitably, Be just; that is nearer to
observance of duty."

"Fulfill the obligations

(responsibilities)

"And swallow (eat) not up your

property among yourselves by false
means, nor seek to gain access
thereby to the judges, so that you
may swallow up a part of the
property of men wrongfully while you

"And speak straight words."

"Avoid most of suspicion (doubt) for surely

suspicion in some cases is sin; and spy
(discover / search out) not nor let some of you
backbite others."

"And follow not that of which thou hast

no knowledge. Surely the hearing and
sight and heart, of all these it will be
asked."

"And help one another in

righteousness (honesty) and piety
(faithfulness), and help not one another in

sin and aggression (violence), and keep

your duty to God."

"And whose affairs are decided by

counsel among themselves."
Senses of Engineering
Ethics
First: Ethics is an activity and area of inquiry.
It is the activity of understanding moral
values, resolving moral issues, and justifying
moral judgment as well as the discipline or
area of study resulting from the activity.
Engineering Ethics, accordingly, is the activity
and discipline aimed at understanding the
moral values that ought to guide engineering
practice, resolving moral issues in engineering
and justifying moral judgment concerning
engineering.
Second
When we speak of ethical problems,
issues and contoversies, we mean to
distinguish them from non moral
problem. Here the world Ethical marks a
contrast between moral questions and
the questions of the political, legal and
artistic in nature.
Third
Sometimes Ethics is used to refer to the
particular set of beliefs, attitudes, and habits
that a person or group displays concerning
morality.
This third sense of engineering ethics is a
purely factual matter about a what engineers
and other believe about moral problem in
engineering.
One our task will be to examine the accepted
convention in engineering to see if they are
clear, justified and sufficiently comprehensive.
Fourth
Synonym of Ethics is morally correct.
In this usage, engineering ethics amounts
to be endorsed by those engaged in
engineering.
Discovering such principles and applying
them to concrete situations is the central
goal of the discipline of engineering
ethics.
