News Story codes
Wahaca-Outside Broadcast + Outside Noise Background OB Shan Outside noise
A code and convention of the bulletin used in News item 1 was an outside broadcast. In this particular
news topic the code was performed by Shaniea, playing the health corresspondent in Waterloo, giving a
report on Wahaca's response to the event.
Another code established was a sound effect, which may be rgued to challenge the natural codes and
conventions, however was of outside background noise which complemented the outside broadcast to
make it more realistic.
Brexit-David Davis speech + Outside Background Noise + Vox-Pop mini OB David
Davis
A code and convention established in News item 2 was a mini outside broadcast performed by Paul
Kingston ( a fabricated name for a person who wanted their name changed), which introduced the other
code and convention of a Vox-pop. This was complimented by a sound effect of outdoor background
noise, which enhanced the realism of the outside broadcast and Vox-pop. Another code established in
this particular news item was a snippet of David Davis speech in Parliament for further evidence of the
particular news item.
USE OF CODES AND CONVENTIONS
Car Crash-Street -OB + Interview
A code and convention established in News item 4 was an outside broadcast performed by
Sophia, who gave details on the car crash event going into depth and explaining the outcome.
This was complemented by a sound effect of the street and ambulance, which helped to
heighten the realism of the news item.
Another code and convention established was an interview with a local pregnant pedestrian,
giving her opinion on Goldhawk Road safety.

Schools-interview which makes some of it natural

We used an interview for the school news story. We used this to show a different
perspective on budget cuts for schools. We also used this as a way to show factual
evidence on how much money will be of a loss.
Weather- Transition music-rain
We used Transition music and the sound effect of rain in the background. We used
the transition music to show that the weather was about to start, and that it was
different from all of our other news items. We used the sound effect of rain to
reflect the weather that was being reported.
DEVELOPMENT OF CODES AND
CONVENTIONS
Before starting with our project, we had to firstly analyze what aspects of a bulletin
production we needed to focus upon. We used codes such as interviews, Vox pops,
sound effects, jingles, outside broadcasts and many more to develop our production
piece. These helped to fill up our project and ensure that we had sufficient resources
to make our production piece look professional and plausible enough to come out as
a radio bulletin piece.

We first began by structuring a jingle, group member Shanneia, was responsible for the
creation of the jingle, these are seen as the opening and ending bits of a radio
production, we then moved to conducting interviews, outside broadcasts and
acquiring voices for a Vox-pop. These were taken around the area of Shepherd's Bush
to maintain consistency to our chosen area of proximity.

Lastly we were required to download some sound effects from free sound, this was due
to the background noise of our Vox-pops, interviews and outside broadcasts, not
being loud enough for the audience to hear, although the sound we took from the
website were not the original sounds of the recordings, it did however fit properly
into our bulletin.
CHALLENGING CODES AND CONVENTIONS
Hospital trailer- The snippet of this documentary trailer is a challenge towards the
codes and conventions of a local news bulletin. This is because snippets of
trailers isnt used in traditional news bulletin as it doesnt appear formal. The
reason we included this trailer snippet was because it made our news bulletin
more interesting especially in delivering information to the audience because it
appeared more interesting rather than having the main presenter say it all. It
helps keep the audience engaged.
Wahacca door closing SFX- This sound effect challenges the usual codes and
conventions in a local news bulletin. This is because this door closing sound
effect is abrupt and it captures the audiences attention straight away because
of the sudden change in audio sound. Local news bulletins usually dont have
abrupt sounds especially a door which is why this specific sound effect
challenges it since I stands out with it abrupt sound.
Ambulance SFX exaggerated- This sound effect challenges the codes and
conventions of a usual local news bulletin because the ambulance sound effect
used in this news item was over exaggerated in order to emphasis the accident.
In a local news bulletin sound effects sound natural or they go unnoticed
however this sound effect is exaggerated making it be recognised by the
audience almost like a signal to what the news item is about.
CHALLENGING CODES AND
CONVENTIONS
Bob Marley jamming music snippet-
This music snippet is a challenge towards the usual codes and conventions of a local
news bulletin due to the fact that local news bulletins do not have music playing in
the background of their news item. They usually have a jingle or a light tune but not
an actual record piece by an artist as it doesnt appear professional or serious. This is
why it is a challenge as this pieces of artists doesnt appear as backing music to a
news item.
Coins sound effect in the news item the school- This sound effect challenges the codes
and conventions of a local news bulletin. This is because local news bulletin doesnt
have specific sound effects such as coins which is what we used in our local news
bulletin. The reason for this is because it can appear to be an abrupt sound which
isnt in local news bulletins as they try to make their audio flow as smoothly as
possible.
Vox pop- This specific code and convention challenges they typical codes and
conventions of a local news bulletin due to the fact that in local news bulletins you
tend to find interviews and outside broadcasts rather than a Vox pop which gives a
variety of opinions. This is because the interviews that they normally conduct give the
opinions they want rather than using a vox pop which gives different opinions due to
the demographics it captures.
