Coursework

Mood board
I collect these images because they were appealing to me and had lots
of inspiring features I could use in my design. My favourite images were
the mandala designs as they show aspects of nature and art, also they
colours are very intriguing. As I researched more the images I grew fond
of the patterns and its features as it shows a really calm and peaceful
mood as it related Buddhism.
Mandala
Symbolism related to Mandala Tattoos. The literal meaning of mandala,
which is a Sanskrit word, is circle and like a circle, the
mandala represents wholeness. A circle also denotes balance,
perfection and eternity as the distance from its canter to all points on it
remains the same, from wherever it is measured.
Theme borad
Product board
As I am thinking about making skirts I went online
and sound some that I liked. From different types of
styles, colours, techniques that I could inspire me for
my designs. My favourite design has to be the black
skirt with the bottoms in the middle and a sort of
computer embroided flower pattern. It captured my
eye as I showed every aspect of my brief and the
style is unique and vintage. This will be a big help in
making my design as I can incorporate most of these
styles and make it into my own unique design
Design Brief
Task: My task is to make an product

The theme that I chose was to do with nature I chose this because I felt like it appealed to me the most out of all options as I have an
interest in art so therefore I could use my skills to make a well made product. Nature themed clothing all have one thing in common, they
are all inspired by nature so as nature has a wide rage of topics I know I will have a lot of things to be encouraged by for my design from
artists to natural forms in which I will do research on. Also it I can be incorporated into many unique, different styles such a mandala
drawing which consists of a circular (mainly) flower based drawing with smaller designs in the petals. I feel that I happily and confidently
chose this brief and I'm sure to do well on it.

My target group will be from 16-21 years that are interested in natural forms, nature, flowers, animals etc. and also like vintage style. I
chose this because I wanted to appeal to young adults as they have a more trendy look. From what I see people in this age range give
me inspirations on what I could possible make as I am aiming for a mature but still youthful look that I could use as the basis for my
project. I think an important thing to consider is the research method I use as it will help with inspiration, others opinion (surveys) and I
can make the most out of the resources I come across. Another thing would be quality control checks to make sure my product does not
have too many faults . For example if were making a skirt with pleats I would need to make sure it ; has no creases, the pleats are
accurately marked & pin for ironing, no loose threads, has a hemmed edge and edge finish. This to ensure that the quality of the product
is adequate to be worn.

Once my product is finished and had refined I will test it out on other people that fit my target audience or client and compare the
reactions between the participants so that could improve my product or keep it as it is if its good enough of a quality.
In this brainstorm I expand my ideas based around my theme which is nature.

Brainstorm This helped to really separate and quickly bullet point features have to cover during
my project, In my brainstorm I develop on;

Product/style/shape: In this section my arrows are on what my design could possibly

be so I've label things like ; bags ,shirt ,v-neck etc all of them fall in various of
categories.

Nature: This is my main theme so I put things like ; wild life, water ,leaves , flowers etc.
I specifically based it around basic nature features.

Decoration Techniques: in this section I put a few techniques that I have done and
also know that I could do.

Colours: I put colours that related to my theme and colours that really go well together
in general too.

Components: I thought of some components that I would use that are also accessible
too.

Research methods: I put a few research methods that I could possibly use.

Target Group: In the section I expanded on my age range and their interests.

Inspirational artists: I labelled this area particularly on artists that do painting on

nature. I done some research and the ones that I liked I put their names on my
brainstorm.

Research plan
In my research plan, I will be using some research methods that will help me find out the following; Cost, Sizes,
Techniques, materials & their properties, my TGM opinion and preference..etc. To do this I thought of a couple of
research methods that I can use:
What? Where? How? Why? What type of
research?
Patterns/style - Nature such as; parks, -Take photos of things To see things that inspire me Primary Research
fields ,gardens so I can use them for my
that inspire me.
-VMA Museum design ideas. E.g. a flower I
-sketch things that I see

park could be a the main
pattern on my design

Cost -Prices in Natural History -Going onto the website So that I know what price I Secondary research
Museum and looking at the shop could put on my product and
section and viewing what see if they are suitable for
they have in store already. my target group. It will also
-Comparing the prices of help me decide whether I
each products want my design to relate to
what's already being sold or
to have a completely unique
design.
Materials -Shops -By going shops and So that I know what materials Secondary/Primary

Product Analysis
Product: White Floral Print Pleated Midi Skirt in New Look for 27.99

This skirt is a midi skirt and it has a pretty floral pattern on a white background with pleats all the way
down and an elasticated waist. Also its 100 % polyester that has to be washed at 40 degrees.

Analysis :I chose this because its chic and has a hipster look to it and I liked how the colours compliment
each other. This skirt fits my design brief and it has aspects of arts as the flowers look painted . I think the
price is suitable as New Look is a well-known high street store and the target group seems to adults 18 &
over. I see this skirt being sold and worn around spring and summer time. Only sizes 6 & 8 seem to be
available which an disadvantages as bigger sized people will find this problematic .An advantage is that
as it has an elasticated waist people that wear 10 or 12 could get away with it.

Product: Black Floral Embroidered Leather-Look Skirt In New Look for 25.99

This skirt is a Mini skirt that had a embroidered floral design on the side. Its high waisted, has a leather-look
finish and the Shell is: 87% Polyester, 10% Cotton, 3% Viscose and Lining: 100% Polyester.

Analysis: This skirt is very simple but stylish compare to the other skirts I saw on the website. The price for
this skirt was a bit expensive because it seems to aimed more for younger people, so I think the price could
be more reasonable in my opinion. I liked the design technique that was used which seemed to be
computer embroidered and the leather-look finish, I love the simplicity of this design as it can be rocked with
many tops like; crop top, long sleeve tops, short sleeve tops, shirts etc. This skirt will be suitable to be worn
for outings as it isnt too formal neither is it casual. I see this being sold and worn during spring and autumn.
The colours match really well as the black background can be matched with all colours.
Product: Luxe Blue Blurred Floral Hi-Low Skirt in Dorothy Perkins for 40

This skirt is an flowy hi-low skirt with blue floral print that has a silk texture .It also ranges from
sizes 6 to 22 and is 100% polyester.

Analysis: The design of this skirt is what drew me to chose this image to analyse as it has such
an beautiful floral print that can affect the mood as the colours make you feel relaxed and calm.
The price of the skirt looks just right because its very formal looking and elegant. This skirt has
a big size range and therefore is accessible to most women. The style of this skirt it suitable for
Spring and looks like a formal wear to me as the material makes it look very chic and posh.
There is a zip on the back of the skirt which makes it more secure and fitted to the body.

Product: ASOS Pencil Skirt in Floral Print with Lace Trim for 32

This skirt is a midi pencil skirt that has a pretty floral print and a parallel lace trim all the way down. It has sizes
4-18 and is 93% Polyester, 7% Elastane. I

Analysis: The style of this skirt has a very classy look to it, which is because of the lace trim and it makes the
skirt look sexy. This skirt has a smooth stretch fabric that makes it comfortable to wear and it is high-rise waist
which trending is most high street stores. The kick split at the back of the skirt makes it easier to walk with and
can be worn for a long period of time .The print of this fabric add liveliness to the skirt as everything else is
black , the colours are bright which make a nice contrast. The print also shows aspects of natures as it not
only has flowers, it has leaves and bird. I think that that skirt will be more likely to be sold and worn around,
Spring and Autumn. The look makes me think going to a dinner, party or going to an outing as it doesn't look
laid-back as a casual wear would be. For a very sophisticated looking skirt the price is lower than expected but
it would sell more as it more reasonable.
Results and analysis
