BACKSHIFT OF TENSES
TELL AND SAY
Use these expressions to report what
other people say.
Tell is followed by an object. He tells us
Say is not followed by an object. He says
that
REPORTED SPEECH WITHOUT BACKSHIFT
OF TENSES
Do not change the tense if the introductory
clause is in Simple Present (e.g. He says). Note,
however, that you might have to change the form
of the present tense verb (3rd person singular).
And sometimes on the pronouns.
Eg
He says, I speak English. He says that he
speaks English.
EXAMPLES
Helen: I want to tell you something about my holiday in
London.
Gareth: What does she say?
You: She says thatshe wants to tell us something about her
holiday in London.

Helen: London is a multicultural place.


Gareth: What does she say?
You: She says thatLondon is a multicultural place

You must change the tense if the


introductory clause is in Simple Past (e. g.
He said). This is called backshift.
Example
He said, I am happy. He said that he
was happy.
