Immigration to Hawaii
As we read about the various immigrant groups who moved to Hawaii,
highlight or underline the REASONS FOR LEAVING THEIR HOME
COUNTRY (Push Factors)

We will then categorize these as social, political, or economic reasons.

Social: reasons having to do with culture, population, quality of life, culture,
discrimination, religion, etc.

Political: reasons having to do with laws and the government

Economic: reasons having to do with business, trade, jobs, etc.

A Day In the Life of A
Plantation Worker
1. As a class, we will read about a typical day in the life of a plantation
worker around 1900.
2. Using everything youve learned in class, take the perspective of a
sugar plantation worker and write a journal entry describing your
day using the eight events from the typical day in the life of a
plantation worker.
EXEMPLAR:
Dear Diary,
Its finally morning but Im still dreading to start this day. Getting up at 4 am to start cooking breakfast and
lunch isnt exactly what I call paradise. I think I am going to make poi today for food; its nothing new. I
almost always make that. The whistle has finally blown, so that means it must be 5 am. As I walk to the mill,
I notice my animal that I regularly take care of. I nicknamed him Sunshine the horse, and hes the only part
of the day I look forward to. At 5:30, I walk back to a specific place for the luna to come so we know what
time to walk to the fields. This is the part of the day that gets very laborious. Its 6 am and this is when my
work day begins. Ouch, while bending over for hours, I think I really hurt my back. Sadly I cant tell anyone
because they cant help me. Yes! Its finally lunch. Even though it only goes until 11:30, that doesnt mean
its bad, but I do have to go back to work until 3:30.

I just finished the work day. It was super hot and trust me its not fun trying to work in 90 degree weather for
10 hours. Now I have to go home and start work on the animals. I dont understand why every time I try to
clean them, they run away. Oh well. The day is almost over and its already 4:30. I should bathe and start
cooking dinner for my children. Ill write back tomorrow!

wages of their workers
On the Plantation
On the plantation, jobs were assigned by ethnicity rather than skill

Chinese operated the mill. This job was dangerous and involved contact with
heavy machinery. (Pay $1/hr)
Japanese harvested sugar cane. This was the most grueling job on the
plantation. Harvesters spent over 4 hours a day bent over in the fields. (Pay
$0.50/hr)
Filipinos organized sugarcane. This was the easiest job on the plantation. (Pay
$1.50/hr)
Portuguese were luna. They enforced the no talking to other ethnicities rule
and called the police when workers misbehaved. (Pay $3/hr)
Germans were police. They backed up the luna and threatened workers. (Pay
$3.50/hr)
Pause:
The year is 1890. Based on the ethnicity youve been assigned,
write a one-paragraph raft describing your life on the sugar
plantation
What is it like? What is your job? Is the system in place fair or
unfair?
Be detailed!
Workers on
Strike
Because workers werent able to talk to other ethnicities, they couldnt organize against the plantation
owners

This was an intentional move by the plantation owner to keep workers in line without having to give
them fair treatment

1909: Japanese workers went on strike for fair wage and work conditions. They were being paid lower
wages than Filipino and Portuguese workers but their strike failed

1920: This time, Japanese AND Filipino workers struck together. Unlike the first strike, the workers
finally got higher wages and better working conditions after 6 months.
Pause:
The year is 1920 (its wrong in your packet, please
correct).

Write another one-paragraph journal entry about

why the second strike was successful, and what
would have happened if only one ethnicity had
gone on strike.
