Gifted Screening

Training
BICKEL, FEILEN, SCHRAM, STRICKLAND & TONGUE
1.Screening:

CISS process - ALL teachers will


observe students over a 2 week
period and identify
characteristics. ALL students not
already in TAG will be considered.
(From late January to early
February)
2.Referral:

Students who receive checks in at


least 5 of the 10 categories, in
addition to 2 forms of supporting
documentation, will be referred.
parent must accept or reject before
the testing process can begin.
3.Testing:

Students may be tested in each of the


following areas:
Mental Ability
Achievement
Creativity
Motivation
4. So, what is CISS?

Teachers will check off any students who


show a superior ability in each area on the
Characteristics CISS form:

5. Characteristics
Checklist:
Motivation - Your students will take interest in
something sometime mundane and go above and
beyond to figure it out

Interests - Your students may find interests in


subject matters that may or may not seem relevant
to other kids their age, but they will do all they can
to become experts in the topics. His would be
encouraged outside of your classroom, but you may
become frustrated when trying to teach the

Communication Skills - Your students should be able to


get their points across, even if it is not verbal. This could
include writing, dancing, playing an instrument, and
simply body language.

Problem-Solving Ability Your students may be able


to quickly find solutions to problems or they may take
longer to find unordinary solutions to problems. Either
way, they are able to configure the puzzle pieces to make
them make sense.

Memory - Your students will be able to recall specific details about


topics that interest them. These topics are not always going to be
school related, or even appropriate for that matter.

Inquiry Your students may take interest my take interest in topics


that have absolutely nothing to do with what you are teaching, and
they may go to extreme lengths to become experts on the subjects at
hand. These lengths could include research, questioning adults they
deem experts, experimenting, and even just continuing to ask you
why even though you dont know the answer.

Insight Your students may demonstrate insight not only by


understanding a topic in and out, but they may also be able to
view political, religious, or social issues from perspectives that
they have never experienced first-hand.

Reasoning - Your students reasoning may be displayed in all


academic areas, including math, writing, and art.

Creativity Though you may not understand your students


writings, drawings, or other products that are the results of creativity,
their abilities to organize material in original formats and create their
own realities are the epitome of creativity. Note that creative does
not necessarily mean pretty or neat.

Humor - Your student senses of humor may be more adult like in


nature and sometimes displayed in inappropriate manners. Dont
respond by locking them away. Instead try to provide them with save
avenues to express it.
7. What do you do?

Over a two week period, observe ALL students who are not
already in the TAG program. This includes students in ESOL and
Special Education!
Look for behaviors indicated on the CISS checklist. Remember,
not all of these behaviors will necessarily manifest positively.
Some may be negative.
Actively observe students for the full 2 week period.
5/10 characteristics = recommend student for testing.
Turn your form into the CISS Chairperson these names will be
sent to the eligibility team.
8. Eligibility

First Eligibility Team Meeting:


The Eligibility Team gathers supporting
information on students who meet
screening criteria.
Then the review the list of students
and supporting information.
Last,the team makes a referral
decision.
Eligibility continued

Send parent notification of Consideration/Consent to Test


home with student.
Referral codes and dates should be entered in ESchool
Test are administered by the TAG Teacher

2nd Eligibility Team Meeting


Data from testing is collected and entered into Eschool Plus
Eligibility is determined based on multiple criteria
Eligibility- What happens next?

A student is eligible for TAG is 3 of the 4


multiple criteria categories of TAG Eligibility
Report answered YES and one piece of the
information is nationally normed
Parents receive a copy of the eligibility report.
If they qualify, placement conference is
scheduled.
Copies are filed permanent records and gifted
folder.
8. Remember

Behaviors observed must be consistent and at a


superior level.
ALLteachers are included in the CISS process. (this
means connections teachers too!)
Justbecause a student is CISSed, doesn't mean that
student will be eligible for TAG services.
