By: Yonathan Ezra

Early Life

Yitzhak Rabin was born in Jerusalem in 1922. He grew up

with his mother, Rosa, and his father, Nehemiah. He went to
school at the House of Education for Workers' Children. When
he finished his time there, he moved to a different school
called Kadori. In Kadori, Rabin was getting high grades and
was successful in school.

1961 Rabin was named Deputy Chief of Staff and was doing so well that they thought that Rabin
could be a candidate for Chief of Staff. In 1963 Levi Eshkol was Prime Minister and allowed
Rabin to be Chief of Staff. By the end of Rabin's term, Eshkol thought he was doing such a good
job that he gave him another year in the position. The Six Day War broke out on June 5, 1967,
but Israel won. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem gave Rabin an honorary doctorate as a
thank you for what he did in the war.
Ambassador to the U.S.

In the beginning of 1968, Rabin finished his time in the military and
received his first diplomatic job as Ambassador to the U.S. In his first year,
Rabin was learning the English language. In September 1970, Nixon
asked Israel, through Rabin, to help King Hussein of Jordan fight off Syrian
and Palestinian threats. But at the end, Israel didnt interfere. After Rabin
finished his term as ambassador, he made further connections with the
U.S. Rabin returned to Israel in 1973 and joined the Labour Party.
First Term as Prime Minister

On June 3, 1974, Rabin was elected Prime Minister of Israel. On

September 1, 1975, Rabin made one of his major achievements by
making a peace treaty with Egypt. After Rabin made peace with Egypt,
he wanted to make peace with the PLO. Rabin knew it would be hard
because the PLO thinks that the land of Israel is theirs and Israel stole
it. They would throw rocks and draw graffiti in places they're not
allowed to. On December 21, Rabin wanted to run for his second term
as Prime Minister, but before he could, it was revealed that Rabin's
wife Leah had kept an illegal bank account from the time Rabin was
ambassador to the U.S. Because of that, he decided not to run again.
Minister of Defense

On July 23, 1984, Rabin joined the Israeli Defense Force as the Minister of Defense.
During this time, Rabin worked in the IDF withdrawal from Lebanon. At the same time,
the Palestinians took 3 Israeli soldiers and would give them back only if Israel would
release 1,150 Palestinians. Israel agreed to their terms and released the Palestinians.
But as Rabins job as Minister of Defense, the people were more worried about the
Intifada. In 1989, Rabin formulated a two-stage peace agreement in which he proposed
that elections be allowed in the territories to choose a local leadership." When Rabin
finished his term as Minister of Defense, Rabin decided to run again for Prime Minister.
Second Term as Prime Minister

In October 1990, the Labour Party realized that Rabin put them back
in power. They wanted to repay him by making him Prime Minister for
the second time. Rabin had many priorities and one of his highest was
making peace. In 1993, Rabin offered the Palestinians a peace treaty
and the Palestinians agreed. Israel wanted to celebrate their peace
treaty with the Palestinians by making a peace treaty with Jordan.
When they offered them a peace treaty they agreed, too. In 1994,
Rabin, Yasser Arafat and Shimon Peres received the Nobel
Peace Prize.
Assassination

Israel wanted to celebrate making peace with other countries

by having a ceremony in Angel's Square. Rabin would make a
speech during it. When the ceremony finished, Rabin was
walking to his car when a Jewish assassin named Yigal Amir
jumped out of the crowd and shot Rabin. He died later at the
hospital and is buried on Mount Herzl.
