Message From Presidente Dayton

Obtaining ReferralsHigh Quality Contacts with Potential for Baptism

Hermana Dayton and I have often stressed two types of work in the Spain Barcelona
Missionworking hard and working smart. We often think of street contacting as
working hard. We face a lot of rejection, people are sometimes rude, it takes courage
to approach the unapproachable, and it is just hard work to be in the street for a couple of
hours. While the yield from street contacting is not great and it requires contacting a lot
of people before we find someone who is willing to listen to our message, our Mission is
unbelievably blessed with success from street contacting. We had 180 baptisms in this
mission last year just from street contacting. In addition, we reach a segment of our
Heavenly Fathers children that we could reach no other way. We are out raising a voice
of warning and giving all of our Fathers children a chance. Thus, we will continue to
street contact in this mission and we will do all that we can to have the Spirit with us
constantly so that He will lead us to those who have been prepared to receive the gospel
of Christ. However, I do not believe that it is working smart to do nothing but street
contacting (except in those areas that have very few members). It can be very
discouraging, frustrating and hard to stay enthusiastic if all we do is street contacting. It
is very wise for a companionship to mix it up and employ a variety of different finding
methods. This keeps missionary work exciting, vibrant and joyful. One of the very best
ways of working smart is to seek out high quality referrals to teach.

Preach My Gospel states, Work with members of the Church to find people to teach. The
ideal situation is when members invite others to be taught and are present for the
teaching. When members do this, more people are baptized and remain active in the
Church. President Gordon B. Hinckley has stated, So many of us look upon missionary
work as simply tracting (street contacting or door knocking). Everyone who is familiar
with this work knows there is a better way. That way is through the members of the
Church. Whenever there is a member who introduces an investigator, there is an
immediate support system..The process of bringing new people into the Church is not
the responsibility alone of the missionaries. They succeed best when members become
the source from which new investigators are found. Many members of the Church are
afraid of doing missionary work and need to be taught and motivated to do it.
Missionaries need to show them how easy it is to be a member missionary. Below are
groups who should be encouraged to provide referrals for you to teach.

ACTIVE MEMBERS a referral from an active member of the Church who has the lessons
taught in their home has a 1/3 chance of being baptized (compared to 1/100 to 1/1000
and visit every single active member in your area. The visits must be brief (45-60 minutes) and
must have a missionary purpose. In these visits, you can share a spiritual thought, visit and get
to know them and ask them at some point in the discussion, Who do you know that is new to
this area? Who do you know that has just had a baby? Who do you know that has had recently
deaths in their family? Who do you know that loves God? Who do you know that just looks and
acts like a Mormon? On occasion, take the time to actually have a practica with them and give
them an opportunity to practice inviting by using you as the investigator.

HIGH-PROBABLILITY MEMBERSthere is a segment of our Church membership that is particularly

high yield when it comes to receiving referrals. That segment includes less active families, part
member families and the families of recent converts. Because their circle of friends is likely to
include many who are not members of the Church, a visit to one of these groups has the
potential to be very helpful. You might ask the question, Who do you know that might want to
hear the gospel? Did you have any friends that might want to have the Lessons? Are any
members of your family potentially interested in having the missionaries come by? Doing follow
up visits is crucial when working with this high-probability group.

WARD COUNCIL MEMBERSbecause this group represents all age groups, keep in mind that Elder
L. Tom Perry said that getting the Ward Council members involved in missionary work is the key
to great success in any ward. These members are the leaders of the ward and have
responsibilities for the major quorums and auxiliaries. Their influence is significant and getting
them involved in finding referrals can be very fruitful. For example, they can look at their rolls
and see which families have unbaptized children and which parents might not be members. The
weekly ward council meeting can be a treasure trove of finding new referrals.

PAST OR CURRENT INVESTIGATORSobviously this group can be a good source of referrals as

you ask the same questions you have asked the high-probability members. Especially after you
have had a marvelous spiritual experience with them, it is a good time to ask them if they have
any family or friends that might want to hear your message.

MEDIA AND CHURCH HEADQUARTERSthe Church creates interest through efforts such as media
advertising, visitors centers, historic sites, welfare and humanitarian aid and the Internet. While
these referrals are pure gifts and like manna from heaven, we should rapidly and thoroughly
check them out within 24 hours of receiving them.

NOCHE DE HOGAR AND CHURCH ACTIVITIESit is my belief that the Noche de Hogar may be the
least recognized but the most powerful missionary tool that members have. Inviting people in to
your home for a low- key spiritual lesson where the Spirit is present, there is love and there is joy
is something that can be duplicated no other way. We have learned so much about the power of
these groups by holding the Noche de Hogar in the Mission Home twice each month.

It will be a glorious day for missionary work when members understand and act on their
responsibility to actively participate in the work of bringing souls to Christ. Imagine a missionary
schedule that was so packed with teaching appointments from referrals that you had no time to
knock doors or street contact. When members are doing the finding, more people are baptized
and they are more likely to stay active. We need to develop the finding of quality referrals to its
highest level in the Spain Barcelona Mission. May the Lord bless you chosen emissaries of the
Master that you will grow in your understanding of both working hard and working smart that we
may increase the number of souls being brought into the waters of baptism. Our purpose is to
build Zion and to glorify our Heavenly Father who blesses us with the miracles that result in
baptism.

Con entusiasmo por esta tema de referencias,

Presidente Merril T Dayton

Message From Hermana Dayton
Forgiveness vs Rejection

Forgiveness is clearing the record of those who have wronged us and then not holding a
grudge. True forgiveness begins by releasing any personal attitudes of bitterness and
looking for ways to invest time, energy and thoughtfulness in the offenders life.
Forgiveness is acknowledging the wrong done by another, it does not take away or excuse
what others have done, but deciding to overcome the wrong and replace it with good.
When we develop a forgiving attitude, we accept the pain others have caused us and
work through the process of restoring relationships as much as possible. Forgiveness
protects ones personal emotional state and encourages offenders to stop their offensive
behavior.
It helps us deal with problems constructively instead of manipulating others, spreading
gossip, taking sides, lashing out or deciding to stop cooperating. Forgiveness clears our
mind so we can pursue justice and mercy instead of revenge and hatred.

The Savior is the perfect example of one who willingly forgave others. Christ forgave the
woman who was taken in adultery. The most beautifully illustrated example of his
forgiveness occurred as he suffered on the cross and exclaimed, "Father forgive them for
they know not what they do." In Matthew 6:14-15 we read, "If ye forgive men their
trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their
trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. And in the D&C 64:10 the
Lord says, "I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive
all men."

Carrie ten Boom is a wonderful example to all of forgiveness. In 1944, the Gestapo raided
the ten Boom's home looking for the Jews they were helping flee from Hitler's Holocaust.
Corrie was separated from her sister and then her father died ten days later. Corrie and
her sister went to prison and found each other in a work camp in Holland and then they
were sent to a concentration camp. They were starved there, treated brutally and forced
to labor. They eventually learned who the man was that betrayed them. Corrie's sister
died that December. She eventually was able to forgive this man. After thewar people
Corrie referred to forgiveness as casting offenses into the depths of the sea and posting a
sign, "No fishing allowed." In 1947, Corrie spoke in Germany and a guard from
Ravensbruck approached her and asked for her forgiveness. Corrie struggled with her
emotions then extended her hand and said, "I forgive you brother with all of my heart!"
What an incredibly inspiring example of forgiveness!

As missionaries we have many, many opportunities to forgive--the people on the streets

who treat us rudely, our companions when they are insensitive, ward members, friends
and investigators when their actions are hurtful. An African proverb says, "He who forgives
ends the quarrel."

President and I love each of you very much and feel grateful for the way you forgive us
when we fall short. We love to see your goodness as you willingly forgive others when they
have offended you. We will continue to pray for you as you willingly forgive others and as
you faithfully serve the Lord.

Much love and gratitude--

Hermana Dayton

Elders and Hermanas,
As we have discussed the needs of the mission, there a few recurring themes that we
would like to make part of El Faro culture. For this reason, in the coming weeks and months
there will be an increasing emphasis in the mission regarding the following items:

The Area Book

Bueno. The area book may not have been one of our strengths in the past, but now it will
be! We have set the goal of going completely electronic with our area book by June
8th, 2017 (yes, this year!). That means that you need to enter 4 hard copy registros in the
area book every day as a companionship. Thats possible: only two per person each day. To
help us meet our goal, we will be doing some special activities during the upcoming
months, including inviting you to bring your electronic area book to every training meeting,
including each intercambio, district meeting, zone enfoque, and zone conference. To help
us kick-start this initiative, we are going to have a special Area Book District Meeting
this week. As part of this meeting, you will have one hour of regular district meeting, and
in the second hour you will have a special training by one of the members of the district on
the area book and spend the remaining time transferring registros into the area book
application. Use this time wisely: it should help you get a good head start. Remember a
wise missionary once said: If you dont update the area book, you dont understand the
atonement.

Piso Checks
Did you know? A study done by Simons College in Boston compared the bacteria found in
tubs vs. those found in trash cans. They found skin infection-causing bacteria in 26% of
tubs tested, compared with just 6% found in garbage cans. Basically, if you dont clean
your tub, its dirtier than your garbage can. Thats gross!! To overcome this problem (and
many others like it), the mission will be installing a new piso check program. Heres how it
works:

So what does this mean? This means that every time your district leader/zone leader/sister
training leader comes over for an intercambio, they will take time at night between 10:00
11:30 to look over your piso and a help you create a better working environment. Doctrine
and Covenants 90:18 teaches: Set inorderyour houses;
keepslothfulnessanduncleannessfar from you.
