Aroma

Extraction by
Pervaporation
Pervaporation
Pervaporation is a membrane-based process
for separating binary or multi-component
mixtures of miscellaneous organic fluids.
The separation of the mixtures is affected
by means of a non-porous, dense
membrane the pervaporation membrane.
Solution Diffusion Model

Sorption of permeating components at the

feed side into the membrane.
Transport of components across the

membrane by diffusion according to Ficks

law.
Desorption at the permeate side into vapour

phase under vacuum.

Current Methods of
AromaExtraction

Distillation
Solvent Extraction
Expression
Enfleurage
Two values characterize a membrane:

Its selectivity (also called separation

characteristic); and
The permeate flux (or mass transfer rate)

across the membrane.

Advantages of
Pervaporation
Membranes properties impact the process
and not the hydrocarbons.
Pervaporation has low energy consumption.

Pervaporation can be effectively clubbed with

any other conventional separation process

Pervaporation systems are simple to operate

and can be started up and shut down rapidly.

No denaturation of aroma.
