In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real magazine products?

The Mast Head Big, bold lettering to make the title stand out. Usually at the top of the page and is mainly central. The header will make the brand image for the magazine and make it instantly
recognisable for its audience. Clash is written in a large, white typeface so concedes with the conventions.

Graphology Little variety in fonts, usually about 3 or 4. Doesnt make the pages become too busy. Consistent fonts are used in Clash to promote professionalism.

Cover lines Not many taglines but are one of the main focuses on the cover to let the reader gain an insight of what is included in the magazine. Soul Bearer is written in a noticeable font to
capture the attention and dominates the page.

Costumes Clothes should usually match the colour scheme of the magazine or the genre that it is. With Clash, the model is wearing green and red clothes which reflect on the colour scheme so
that it emulates the genre.

Barcode and pricing A small barcode so that it doesnt gain too much unneeded attention. Prices are in a small font underneath but are still easily legible. Clash confines with this and have also
used a small barcode with a small font so that it does not take too much space on the page.

Colour Palette Usually a consistent colour theme throughout so that it connotes a fresh look which will appeal to their assumed audience. The colours across the magazine are red and orange that
are maintained throughout which makes it have a clean and fresh look.

Central Image The most common camera shots is the mid-shot as it focuses on the models face whilst also showing their clothes which can be very important as it can promote a certain brand or
fashion that the audience would copy. A mid-shot is used to focus on the artists face in Clash. It is not looking directly at the reader which breaks the rules of the main image, however, it makes
the cover looks edgy and unique.

Genre A genre is used so that a magazine can have an overall theme which certain people would be looking for. It is a significant aspect of a magazine as it will determine whether the audience
will read it or not. The overall genre is of an Indie, classic nature which is kept throughout the whole magazine and makes it clear to the reader what type of music will be featured.

How artists are represented Models should be represented as a mirror to the chosen style of the magazine, for example, if it was a pop magazine, the model should not wear black clothes as
this would be opposite as to what they are trying to represent. In Clash, King Krule is represented as being unique and original as he is wearing slightly obscure clothes and his hairstyle is also
different which will attract the proposed audience.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real magazine products? The mast head My magazine title contends to the conventions of an Indie magazine as the lettering is
big and bold and makes it one of the main features of the magazine. The font that I used was Impact and
is similar to other fonts that are used on magazine. I chose the name Metronome as it relates to music
and is aesthetically pleasing on the page as it fits across the cover. I also find that it is quite memorable
due to its originality therefore more people will be able to remember it and p My masthead is quite similar
to Clash and Fader as I wanted the same look as those magazines due to both having white, bold and
large lettering. Metronome sits centrally at the top of the page which is usually where most mastheads
are positioned.

Graphology/Page layouts The cover of my magazine is not busy at all as I felt that a minimalistic approach
was an appropriate one for my target audience and does not make the magazine look as though it is too busy.
Through my research and planning, I had found out that most magazines have big and bold lettering and is
usually either black or white to make it stand out against the front of the magazine. The white text on my cover
complements the image a lot due to the contrast of the grey background. For the layout of my magazine, I
used another simplistic approach to carry on with the theme throughout the cover, contents and double page
spread. My contents page had changed the most throughout the process as I did not like it when I first made it
for my draft and it was after my feedback that I restyled it to make it look a lot better. The masthead on my
contents page is the same font as my cover page to connote consistency within my magazine. I chose black
text to go on top of the white background which is another consistent feature that is spread across all three
pages. My double page spread includes many conventions of a magazine and I had adopted some from
researching other magazines. For example, there is use of a drop cap at the beginning of my article which a lot
of other magazines use for a decorative element to their pages. The fonts that I used were Impact (for the mast
head on my cover and contents pages), Lucida bright (for the subheading and artists on my cover), Bodoni Mt
(for the text on my contents), Belfast Light SF (for the mast head and sub heading on my double page spread)
and Baskerville old face (for the text on my double page spread). I wanted to have a slight variety in the fonts
that I used but I wanted to make sure that they were not all different, therefore I used the same font for some
text on pages. With my barcode on the cover, I had feedback from my teacher to make it smaller as on my
draft magazine, it was slightly too big and would take up unneeded space on my magazine, therefore, I
downsized it so that it was not a major part of my magazine. Some magazines, like Billboard, positioned their
mast head behind the model on the cover, I did not like this idea as I thought that it would not be a good
selling point as some people may not be able to read the magazine title if they had never seen that magazine
before, which is why I put the title over my model. In my draft, I had challenged the convention of having three
columns in the article on the double page spread as I thought that this could fit more furniture onto the page,
however, when I received my feedback, I was told that I should use three columns as this will look as though I
don't have too much writing on the page and my audience would rather have to read less, otherwise, they
would just scan over the page and not read the article. Therefore, I had decided to change it so that it could be
created at its best potential.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real magazine products?
Costumes My models were styled to what typical Indie people dress as. With the
models for the Division band, the male was dressed in a plain white top, a leather
jacket and black jeans and then glasses were added in for the double page spread
image. With the female, she was dressed in a white crop top, a flannel shirt and black
jeans. On the contents page, the male was dressed in a brown flannel shirt and grey
jeans and the female was dressed in a green flannel shirt, a black crop top and light
blue jeans. I thought that these were typical Indie clothing as during my research, I
had found what Indie clothing is and adapted to what clothes they were wearing. I
picked quite simplistic and natural outfits with block colours so that they mirrored the
colours on the magazine backgrounds which helped to make the contents, cover and
double page spread look more authentic.

Colour palette Most magazines used a variety in colours, for example, Clash uses
colours ranging from black and white to orange and blue. To emulate my Indie vibe, I
wanted to choose a black and white colour scheme, however, in my survey feedback
for my audience, when I had created a question for what is their preferred colour
scheme, only 33.3% of people had voted for black and white, this drew with neon. I
stuck with black and white as when I looked at other Indie magazines, most of them
had a black and white colour scheme, therefore, I used this. I developed the
convention of a black and white colour scheme by adding in a slight bit of colour, my
contents page is the only page that involves colour and this was because I wanted
my magazine to appeal to a bigger audience. It also allowed my magazine to look as
though it was not boring with only two colours incorporated.

Camera work/Central Image I had used a mid-shot for the front cover as this contends to the conventions of a cover. In the process of making my magazine, I had
to decide two significant aspects which were: whether to have a male or female on the front; to have a single person from The Division on the cover or both of them.
The reason why I went with a male on the front was because I thought that perhaps more people would appeal to this due to the female gaze and inspiration for
males. Although a female could do this too, but with a male gaze and inspiration for females, I thought that the male would attract a bigger audience due to most
magazines having a female on the cover. This would exhibit a unique and original approach. With deciding whether to have just a single person or both from the band
on the cover, I referred to Roger Blacks perception A cover should be a poster. A single image of a human will sell more copies than multiple images or all type.
Always has, always will. and decided that I should just use a single person on the cover so that it would help with selling more copies of my magazine. My double
page spread image used a full length shot to show the clothes that the models are wearing which would attract an audience who are looking for fashion.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real magazine products?
Genre The genre of my magazine is Indie and I wanted to have this as my chosen
genre as I thought that the artists of that genre were good and I listen to them.
The stylistic approach of Indie can be original which I had tried to make it, whilst
also following the conventions, and I liked the way popular Indie magazines were
set out. The way that I had made my magazine known to be Indie was by including
Indie groups/artists and having a black and white colour scheme which is very
popular and generic with Indie magazines. As I have a theme that runs throughout
the magazine, more people would be inclined to buy it due to its look of
professionalism.

How artists are represented Each artist in my magazine had a slightly different
representation although they all had to generate an Indie vibe. My cover artist was
being represented as masculine due to the dark background and the shadowing
around his face. I feel that this was represented successfully. With the artists on
my contents page, I decided to represent them to current popular artists as the
female was positioned as Taylor Swift and the male was positioned in one of Ed
Sheerans famous poses. The overall Indie theme was produced through the
styling and positioning of the artists and I think that this was definitely
accomplished and will attract an Indie audience.
