WHAT IS A DIFFERENTIAL?
A Differential is a device that splits the engine
torque two ways, allowing each output to spin
at a different speed

Why?

To compensate for the difference in Simple

distance the inner wheels and outer Answer!!!
wheels travel as the car goes around a
corner
TYPES OF DIFFERENTIALS

Differentials

Open Limited Slip Torsen

Differential Differentials Differentials
OPEN DIFFERENTIAL

DIAGRAM OF OPEN DIFFERENTIAL
WORKING OF OPEN
DIFFERENTIAL
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Advantages
Cheap
Reliable
Provide good highway performance
Relatively simple design
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Disadvantages:
A Open differential sends most of the power to the wheel
with the least load or strain on it.
This means that if one wheel loses traction due to ice or
sand, the differential sends all the power to the wheel
causing the car to swerve or get stuck on the patch.
Another place where it can cause a problem is if you are
off-roading.
KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER

The Open differential is the most common type

It splits engine power between front and rear axle.
It provides equal amount of torque to each wheel.
THE OPEN DIFFERENTIAL

Also called a slipping differential

The most common differential on cars
Allows for free slippage between the two sides of the axle
Prevents tires from rubbing the ground and thus putting
strain on the drivetrain system
LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL
Faiza Saleem
PURPOSE

To overcome the traction difference between the two wheels

INTRODUCTION

Torsen is a contraction ofTorque-Sensing.

It is is the most unique and ingenious method of providing
differential action while the traction difference problem.
WORKING

Lock up when torque imbalance occur.

Max torque imbalance defined by Torque Bias Ratio (TBR).
To overcome the traction difference between the two wheels.
