Output devices
Output Devices are all part of the Hardware
of a computer system
Output Devices are about seeing the results
of your work.
Devices which produces output to the user.
There is various forms of result and different

devices for each different kind.

Some Output Devices
Monitor, pointer

Paper
Video Monitor

Sound
Types of Output

Soft copy

Hard copy
Screen Output Soft Copy
Video Monitor
Also called Video Display Terminal (VDT)
Image exists in video memoryVRAM
Monitor size is measured diagonally
across the screen
Classes of monitor
o Types are:- TFT (Thin film transistor)

CRT (cathode ray tube)

LCD (liquid crystal display)

Features of CRT Displays
Display text and graphics
Monitors differ in resolution
Standards
SVGA 1024 x 768, 1208 x 1024 and 1600 x
1200
XGA has same resolutions but supports more
colours
Screen sizes vary from 15 to 21
CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
A CRT is a television-style monitor
Its features include:

Clear image
Quick response time
Low cost
Very popular
LCD (Liquid Crystal
Display)
LCDs comprise flat-panel monitors
Found on watches, calculators, digital

cameras and notebook computers

Lighter weight
Crisp, clear images
Extra viewing area for same size
More expensive to buy
Consume less power
TFT- THIN FILM
TRANSISTOR
Thin film transistor is the device within
each pixel that sets the charge.
It is also used in LCD screens
It is manually used in laptops
It has best display for games and video and

multimedia.
speaker

It also produces softcopy in form of sound

It allows user to listen the music
It ranges wide in quality and price
Personal computer generally contain 200-

500 watt speaker

Laptops come with integrated speakers.
Screen image projection

It is used to project information from a

computer to a large screen ,so it can be
viewed by large number of peoples
It is useful for making presentation for large

group of peoples
It directly plugged to a computer system
Paper Output Hard Copy
A printer is a device that
produces output on paper
Most printers today can produce
both text and graphics
Two types of printers:

Impact printers
Non-impact printers
IMPACT PRINTER
Impact Printers come in various
categories:-
1. Dot matrix printers
2. Line printers
3. Drum printers
4. Daisy wheel printers
. Most common of all these is dot
matrix printers.
DOT MATRIX PRINTERS
Itis the most popular serial printer (prints
one character at a time).
The print head contains a vertical array of

pins.
When selected pins fire against an inked

ribbon desired material is printed on the

paper by these dots.
Line Printer
Line printers
Used by mainframes for
jobs that need a large volume of
printing
Limited characters available
Print an entire line at a time
Cheap to run
Not high quality
NON-IMPACT PRINTERS
The natural limitations and cost of the
impact printers have led to the
development of the non-impact printers.
These can primarily be categorized in
these types:-

o Inkjet printers.
o Laser printers.
Laser Printers

Laser printers
Image transferred to paper
with a laser beam
. Faster and more expensive
than dot-matrix
. High-resolution output
. Expensive to buy
. Quite expensive to run
Ink-Jet Printers
Ink-jet
Dots of ink are sprayed onto the paper to form the
image
Reasonably high quality
Available in colour or B/W
Speed measured in pages per minute
Reasonably priced
Expensive to run
Plotters
Used by graphic
designers/architects
Image transferred to paper with
ink pens
Very high resolution
Excellent for scientific and
engineering applications
