SUBMITTED BY : TAMBOLI MAJID KHALED

CONTENTS
Introduction
LAMM
Sequential Tasks for LAMM
INTRODUCTION
o The machining process:-
Material removal by chip
formation
Common machining process like
Turning, milling, etc.
Oblique cutting processes
Material is removed due shear in
the shear zone.
INTRODUCTION
o Machining at the Microscale:-
Machining less than 200m
R. Masuzawa defined 0.1m to 200m.
Larger interface value is used for rough
operation
Smaller interface value is used for finishing
operation
INTRODUCTION
o Need for Micromachining:-
Applications in the field of medical, optics and
semiconductor.
Like,
uidic actuators and steering oscillators- during
surgery
micro turbines - removal of arterial plaque, micro-
pumps for dosing of drugs
INTRODUCTION
The old method used for these components
lithographic based micromachining or LIGA.
In which etchants or acids are used to obtain
desired surface
This process is limited to very simple
components
INTRODUCTION
o Mechanical Micromachining:-
Can process wide variety of component
Can process metals, ceramics and polymers
Can also produce 3-D surfaces
This process is less expensive due to no use of
specialised equipments/environment such as clean
room.
But limited to workpiece material
LAMM
o LASER Assisted Mechanical Micromachining:-
LASER is used for thermal softening of material and
then tool is used to cut material
So we can get desired shape & size on lesser
application of force.
A care is needed to minimize the thermal damage in
heat affected zone.
ADVANCEMENT IN LAMM
Use of ultra-short pulsing lasers
Smaller heat affected zone is created
Sequential Tasks for LAMM
Design and fabrication of a LAMM setup with a 35W
fiber laser

Experimental characterization of the LAMM process

Modelling the process mechanics

Optimization of the process using engineering statistical

method
DESIGN OF A LAMM SETUP
Power- 0, 10, 20W
laser spot diameter- 70-110
m
focal length- 250 mm to 400
mm
Tool is made up of tungsten
carbide (WC) coated with
TiAlN.
Workpiece material- 1018
Carbon Steel
CONCLUSIONS
Laser assisted mechanical micromachining
process is a non-conventional machining
technique.
This technique can be utilized for the hard-to-
machine materials like, ceramics, various steels,
glass, etc.
Thermal softening can be induced by laser heating
and up to 56% and 46% reduction in the cutting
and thrust forces, respectively is observed at 35 W
laser heating.
