FIRE

EXTINGUISH
ERS
Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are designed
to extinguish small fires.
When a fire does break out we
shall be able to quickly select
the correct type of extinguisher
and extinguish the fire before it
spreads and get out of control.
FIRE EXTINGUISHER

We shall be able to
extinguish the fire
without putting our
self at unnecessary
risk of personal injury
or harm.
effective if we know which
type to use and can operate
them correctly.

This means we shall be able

to:
Recognize the different classes of
fire; and
Know which extinguisher to use on
each class of fire
FIRE
Fire is a very rapid chemical
reaction between oxygen and
a combustible material, which
results in the release of
heat,light,flames, and smoke.
For fire to exist ,the following four elements
must be present at the same time.

Enough oxygen to sustain

combustion;
Enough heat to raise the
temperature to its ignition point.
Some sort of fuel or
combustible material; and
The chemical reaction that is
fire.

Types of FIRE
Type A Ordinary Combustibles;
paper,cloth,wood,rubber and many plastics;
Type B- Flammable liquids; oils,gasoline,some
paints,lacquers,grease, solvents;
Type C- Electrical Equipment; wiring, fuse
boxes, energized electrical appliances,
computers and other electrical sources;
Type D-Metals such as
magnesium,titanium,potassium
and sodium; and
Type K- Kitchen Fires involving combustible
cooking fluids such as oils and fats.
Type of Fire
Extinguishers
Water-Air pressurized water
extinguishers(APW)
Water is one of the most commonly used extinguishing
agents for type A fires. They are filled about two-
thirds of the way with ordinary water, then pressurized
with air. In some cases, detergents are added to the
water to produce foam.
APWs extinguish fire by cooling the surface of the fuel
to remove the heat element of fire triangle.
APWs are designed for class A
(wood,paper,cloth,rubber, and certain plastics) fires
only
IMPORTANT-never use water on flammable liquid fires.
never use water on electrical fires.
CO2 or DRY CHEMICAL
Extinguisher
This type of extinguisher is filled with
Carbon Dioxide(CO2), a non-flammable gas
under extreme pressure. This extinguishers
put out fires by displacing oxygen, or taking
away the oxygen element of the fire triangle.
CO2 extinguishers are designed for class B
and C (flammable liquid and electrical ) fires
only.
IMPORTANT-It is not recommended for class A fire
as they may continue to smolder and re-ignite after
CO2 dissipates.
Multi-purpose-DRY
CHEMICAL
Dry chemical extinguishers put
out fires by coating the fuel
with a thin layer of fire
retardant powder, separating
the fuel from the oxygen. The
powder also works to interrupt
the chemical reaction, which
makes these extinguishers
extremely effective.
Dry chemical extinguishers will have a
label indicating they may used on class
A, B, or C fires.
Dry chemical extinguishers are usually
rated for class B and C fires. They
contain an extinguishing agent and use
a compressed, non-flammable gas as a
propellant.

The fire extinguishers in our work area

must be regularly checked to make sure
they are always ready to use in the
event of a fire.
You should check the;

Trigger is not bent

Locking pin is positioned through
the trigger and handle;
Cylinder is not split or corroded
Nozzle is not blocked;
Hose is not split or punctured ; and
Pressure gauge needle is pointing
to the fully charged position.
Before you attempt to
extinguish a fire you must
decide if it is safe for you
to do so.If it is safe you
shall;
Identify a safe route before
approaching the fire.
Do not allow fire ,heat or smoke to
come between you and your safe
route.
Select the correct type of fire
extinguisher or the type of fire.
Test the extinguisher before
moving into the immediate
area of the fire.

Stand up-wind of the fire to

avoid smoke and fumes.

Discharge the extinguisher

within its effective range using
the pull,aim,squeeze,sweep
technique.
Most fire
extinguishers operate
using the following
P.A.S.S. technique

PULLPull the pin, This will

also break the tamper seal.
AIMAim low, pointing
extinguisher nozzle at the
base of the fire.
SQUEEEZE
Squeeze the handle
to release the
extinguishing agent.

SWEEPSweep from side to

side at the base of the fire until
it appears to be out. Watch the
area,re-ignites,repeat steps 2-4.
