INTRODUCTION
A composite material is a material made from two or more
constituent materials with significantly different physical or
chemical properties that, when combined, produce a material
with characteristics different from the individual.
Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) are comprised of a
variety of short or continuous fibres bound together by an
organic polymer matrix.
The polymers commonly mixed with fibre reinforcement can

be used as a composite. The mixture of a polymer(epoxy

resin) and a fibre reinforcement(glass wool) is used to make a
composite
QUERIES FROM PREVIOUS
REVIEW
In what manner will you spread the fiber?
Ans : randomly spread
What are the applications of epoxy resin?

Ans: 1. curing 2. adhesive

3.epoxy flooring & composites
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
Usually glass is a brittle material.
Hence a polymer named epoxy resin is mixed with glass to

improve its strength and toughness.

Therefore, it can be applied in Helmet coverings, car

windshields and has wide range of applications.

OBJECTIVE
The main objective is to investigate the
polymer matrix composite along with its
load withstanding capacity.
As polymers may have lower molecular

weight and has high load withstanding

capacity it can be suited for making bullet
proof materials .
RAW MATERIALS
POLYMER : Epoxy resin(LY556)
HARDENER : Anhydride(HY 917)
REINFORCEMENT : E- glass
fiber(choped)
PLYWOOD : As required
WAX : As required
LAMINATION SHEET : As requied
HEAT GUN
COMPOSITION

Glass fibre : 20% by weight

Epoxy resin : 80% by weight
METHODOLOGY
Hand layup method is employed here.
A required plate is made with dimensions of
36*23*1cm.
In this method, a layer of resin and glass fiber
is coated one over the other repeatedly till the
required thickness is achieved.
To avoid blow holes, heat gun is used.
Then the plate is sealed and the mechanical
load is applied over the plate.
After 24hours of loading, a composite is made.
TESTING METHODS
The various testing methods employed for
our composite are,
a. Hardness test
1.Rockwell
2.Brinell
b. Impact test
1.Izod
2.Charpy
c. Tensile and Compressive test(UTM)
TASK COMPLETED
The composite of required dimension was
made by using hand layup technique.
Hence the completed composite is

presented by an image
TASK TO BE COMPLETED
Cutting of composite material to a required
size as needed for testing.
The values after testing can be tabulated

and represented in the form of graph or

charts.
Comparison with the standard values of

glass used in industries and automotives.

Finally the report has to be compiled.
