OVERVIEW Sector: Interactive Media Google began as a search engine in 1997 and since has rapidly grown into not only the most successful search engine but also has bought a large number of companies and generated billions in revenue from advertising. Structure and Ownership: Google has more than 70 offices in 50 countries It operates on the basis of a dual class voting structure which means that the shareholders are divided into Class A and Class B. Class A entitles shareholders to one vote per share and Class B entitles shareholders to ten votes per share. Larry Page, Sergey Brin (the founders) and Eric Schmidt will control 37.6% of voting power in coalition with the executive management team and directors who will control 61.4%. OVERVIEW Product Diversity: Google has many diverse products. They are all essentially search engines rather than original applications themselves. Google, Gmail, Google+, Google Play, Google Play store, Google Play Movies and TV, Goggle Play Music, Books and Games. Sources of Income: 89% of Googles revenue comes from advertising. Two main advertisers provide this income: AdWords and AdSense. The rest is derived from Enterprise products; Google buys companies to have ownership over them. Its biggest purchase was of Motorola Mobility in 2011($12.5 billion) ORGANIZATIONAL OBJECTIVES Competitors Bing is Microsofts answer to Google. It began in 2009. It was previously MSN 2nd largest search engine in the U.S. However it only has a usage rate of 20.9% and Google has 63.9%. Essentially, Google has no real competition as it is by far the most successful search engine. In contrast to Bing, it has: Better company focus More Data- 5 to 6x the market share of Bing. Greater investment- people and money. Attractive for creative thinkers. ORGANIZATIONAL OBJECTIVES Customers Google is a free search engine which can be accessed through Wi-Fi. Most appliances will already have chrome and the browser installed on the devices as well as other applications offered by Google. Google offers a highly precise targeted and personal service to users because it has access to web history. There is no specific range of customers as all vary in demographics.
