STRATEGIES FOR
LISTENING

How to work with listening

comprehension activities?
New theories recommend teachers of
EFL to work listening comprehension
activities following this three stages:

1.- Before / Pre -listening period.

2.- While / During listening period.

3.- After / Consolidation listening

period.
Before/Pre-listening
period.

Use these activities to prepare your students for the topics and
content they are going to listen to.
During pre-listening the teacher may:
1. Assess students' background knowledge of the topic
and linguistic content of the text
2. Provide students with the background knowledge
necessary for their comprehension of the listening
passage or activate the existing knowledge that the
students have about the subject.
While /During listening
period

Keep
. these points in mind when planning activities, we present you
some tips for this:while-listenining

1.- If students are about to complete a written task during

or immediately after listening, allow them to read through
it before listening.
2.- Keep writing to a minimum during listening.
3.- Organize activities so that they guide listeners through
the text.
4.- Use questions to focus students' attention on the
elements of the text crucial to comprehension of the whole.
5.- Use predicting to encourage students to monitor their
comprehension as they listen.
6.- Give immediate feedback whenever possible.
After consolidation
Listening period
Students need to act upon what they have heard to clarify meaning
and extend their thinking. Well-planned post- listening activities
are just as important as those before and during. Some examples
follow:
• Students may summarise the oral text, in writing,
or as an outline.
• In addition to the traditional outline format, students
could use time lines, flow charts, ladders, circles,
diagrams, webs, or maps.
• Listen and sing the song
• Create and act out the dialogue
• Mime the actions
After consolidation
Listening period

-Change the verses/words of a song/dialogue and

sing or act it out
- Write down a summary of the listening.
- Discuss about the topic of the listening
- Draw an object that best represents the topic of the
listening

LOVE ADVISER
ACTIVITY # 2
LETTER 1

Will marriage bring love?

Dear Love adviser,

I recently broke up with a man I loved and he married another

girl. I have been going out with someone else ever since. He´s
29 and I´m 26 . Now he has asked me to marry him and I
suppose I would be mad to refuse. But I don´t love him, through
I´m fond of him. I live in a small village so I´m unlikely to get
another chance. I don´t want to be left on the shelf. My mother
says love grows if you marry someone who is good to you. Do
you think she´s right?

TELEPHONING
ACTIVITY # 3
SITUATION # 1

You are Gene/Jean.

You are studying for an important exam next week and are
just struggling with a difficult book. When you think that you
have just worked out what one chapter means the phone ring.
You know you have to go back to your book quickly so as not
to forget what you worked out.
ACTIVITY # 3
SITUATION # 2

You are Carolina.

You are in a hurry because you are going out in half an hour
and want t wash and dry your hair beforehand. Your phone
rings.
Do you • 1. We should correct students directly all of the time if we are
agree or to improve accuracy.
disagree • 2. You should not adapt the content of a textbook. It is always
? best to stick to the book.
• 3. In order to improve fluency, we should get students to speak
T faster.
H • 4. Asking Ss open-ended questions can be better than having
them answer only closed-ended ones.
I
• 5. We should emphasize communicative activities that get
N students to use a particular language form or structure
unconsciously.
K
• 6. Writing parts of statements on the board does not really help
develop fluency.
• 7. We should avoid error correction as much as possible. Our
A
students speaking skills will get better on their own over time.
B • 8. If a student does not answer your question quickly, you
O should provide some of the answer yourself.
• 9. Teacher Talk Time is always something we should avoid.
U • 10. Student motivation does not influence the development of
T speaking skills directly.
