 Introduction
A Cognitive Radio uses intelligent signal processing (ISP) at
the physical layer of a wireless system and is achieved by
combining ISP with Software Defined Radio
Simply a radio that is aware of its surroundings and adapts
intelligently
Radio which aware of its parameters and Capable of
determining the relative effect that each parameter will have.

 Software Defined Radio
SDR system is radio communication system where

components that have typically been implemented in

hardware like Mixers, filters, amplifiers,

modulators/demodulators, detectors are instead

implemented using software on personal computer or

other embedded computing devices.

A basic SDR system may consist of apersonal
computerequipped with a sound card, or otheranalog to
digital converter, preceded by some form ofRF front end.
Significant amounts ofsignal processing are handed over to
the general-purpose processor, rather than being done in
special-purpose hardware
Such a design produces aradio which can receive and transmit
widely different radio protocols.It is enabler of CR.

A CR is a adaptive multi-dimensionally aware intelligent wireless

communication system that learn from its experience to reason, plan and

decide future action to meet consumer needs .

Characteristics :

(a) Cognitive capability- ability of the CR technology to capture or

sense the information from its radio environment.

(b) Reconfigurability - enables the cognitive radio to be programmed

dynamically according to the radio environment.

the proper allocation of available resources.
