BASIC LENS CONCEPTS

SENSOR DIMENSIONS
FOCAL LENGTH
ANGLE OF VIEW
FIELD OF VIEW
DEPTH OF FIELD
SENSOR DIMENSION

DIFFERENT DIGITAL CAMERAS HAVE DIFFERENT

SENSOR SIZES. THE WIDTH AND THE HEIGHT OF THE
SENSOR WILL DETERMINE THE FIELD OF VIEW, AND
WILL BE USED TO CALCULATE THE CROP FACTOR.
FOCAL LENGTH

THE FOCAL LENGTH OF A LENS WILL NEVER CHANGE, REGARDLESS OF

THE SENSOR USED. THE FOCAL LENGTH IS THE DISTANCE IN
MILLIMETRES, FROM THE POINT WHERE LIGHT RAYS CONVERGE IN A LENS
TO THE DIGITAL SENSOR (OR FILM). IT DEFINES MANY OF THE LENS
CHARACTERISTICS, INCLUDING PERSPECTIVE AND MAGNIFICATION.
THE COMBINATION OF SENSOR SIZE AND FOCAL LENGTH WILL
CHANGE THE ANGLE OF VIEW AND THE FIELD OF VIEW.
ANGLE OF VIEW

THIS IS A MEASURE OF THE VANTAGE POINT FROM THE LENS. A SHORT

FOCAL LENGTH WILL GIVE YOU A WIDE ANGLE OF VIEW, TAKING IN MORE
OF THE IMAGE THAN THE NARROW
ANGLE CREATED BY A LONG FOCAL LENGTH LENS.
FIELD OF VIEW

WE ARE USING FIELD OF VIEW TO MEAN THE LENGTH THAT THE LENS
WILL COVER

AT A CERTAIN DISTANCE. THE FOV CAN BE MEASURED HORIZONTALLY,

VERTICALLY OR DIAGONALLY. OUR EXAMPLES ARE OF THE HORIZONTAL
FIELD OF VIEW. SHORTER FOCAL LENGTHS WILL HAVE A WIDER FOV
THAN LONGER FOCAL LENGTHS. THE HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL
FIELDS OF VIEW DEFINE THE FRAME LINES AT A GIVEN DISTANCE.

(NOTE THAT SOME PEOPLE USE FIELD OF VIEW TO MEAN THE SAME
THING AS ANGLE OF VIEW).
ANGLE OF VIEW VERSUS FIELD OF VIEW
THE ANGLE OF VIEW REMAINS CONSTANT FOR A GIVEN SENSOR AND LENS, THE FIELD OF
VIEW VARIES WITH THE DISTANCE OF THE SUBJECT BEING FILMED. ANGLE OF VIEW AND
FIELD OF VIEW DEFINE EACH OTHER; YOU CAN USE ONE TO CALCULATE THE OTHER.
THE ANGLE OF VIEW (IN BURNT ORANGE ON THE LEFT) IS DEFINED AT THE LENS
POSITION. SIMPLE DIRECTORS VIEWFINDERS CHANGE THE ANGLE OF VIEW TO
SIMULATE WHAT DIFFERENT LENSES WILL COVER.

THE FIELD OF VIEW IS THE HORIZONTAL (OR VERTICAL OR DIAGONAL) LENGTH OF THE
IMAGE AT A GIVEN DISTANCE FROM THE LENS. THE RIGHT-HAND DIAGRAM ILLUSTRATES
DIFFERENT FIELDS OF VIEW AT DIFFERENT DISTANCES FROM THE LENS. FILMMAKERS ARE
USUALLY INTERESTED IN THE FIELD OF VIEW AT THE DISTANCE WHERE ACTORS ARE
STANDING..
THE HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL FIELDS OF VIEW DEFINE THE FRAME AT A GIVEN
DISTANCE.
DEPTH OF FIELD

THIS IS THE HOW MUCH WILL BE IN FOCUS AT A GIVEN DISTANCE. THE

DEPTH OF FIELD DEPENDS ON FOCAL LENGTH AND T-STOP, AS WELL AS
THE CIRCLE OF CONFUSION, AND MORE COMPLEX ELEMENTS LIKE THE
LIGHTING AND CONTRAST OF A SCENE. BUT ALL OTHER THINGS BEING
EQUAL, LONGER FOCAL LENGTHS WILL HAVE LESS DEPTH OF FIELD THAN
SHORTER FOCAL LENGTHS, AND LARGER IRIS APERTURES (E.G T2) WILL
HAVE LESS DEPTH OF FIELD THAN SMALLER ONES (E.G. T4).

FOCAL LENGTHS WITH SAME FIELD OF VIEW
.
THE WIDE ANGLE ISSUE

A S MENTIONED IN THE FIRST WHITE PAPER, THE PRIMO 70S ARE DESIGNED FOR A
70MM SENSOR, WHICH HAS A CROP FACTOR OF ABOUT 2. S O THE WIDEST LENS IN
THE PRIMO 70 SERIES, THE 24MM, HAS ROUGHLY THE SAME FIELD OF VIEW AS A
12MM IN SUPER 35, WHICH IS PLENTY WIDE. HOWEVER WHEN USING THE PRIMO
70S WITH SMALLER SENSORS, THE 24MM MAY NOT BE WIDE ENOUGH.

WHEN SHOOTING 2.39, THE 24MM HAS THE SAME FIELD OF VIEW AS:
19MM ON A DRAGON 6K,
20MM ON AN ALEXA OPEN GATE.
(THE FIELD OF VIEW ON THE SONY F55 IS 24MM, THE SAME AS SUPER 35).
SENSOR SIZE & DEPTH OF FIELD

SENSOR SIZE HAS NO EFFECT ON THE DEPTH OF FIELD. A 21MM AT T2.8 WILL
ALWAYS BE A 21MM AT T2.8, WHETHER ITS ON A 70MM CAMERA, A RED
DRAGON, OR A SUPER 35 CAM- ERA. HOWEVER A 27 M M ON A RED DRAGON
WILL GIVE YOU THE SAME FIELD OF VIEW AS A 21 M M ON SUPER 35, AND
USING A LONGER LENS GIVES YOU LESS DEPTH OF FIELD.

S O AT THE SAME CAMERA POSITION AND WITH THE SAME FRAMING, A

FILMMAKER WILL GET LESS DEPTH OF FIELD ON A RED DRAGON THAN ON
SUPER35, BUT ONLY BECAUSE HE HAS TO USE A LONGER LENS.
PANAVISION PRIMO V SERIES LENSES
AFTER 60 YEARS OF SETTING INDUSTRY STANDARDS FOR FILM
OPTICS AND CAMERAS, PANAVISION HAS STEPPED FORWARD TO
SET THE STANDARD FOR LENSES SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR
DIGITAL CAMERAS. BUILT ON THE SAME GLASS ELEMENT AS
PANAVISION'S PRIMO PRIMES, THE PRIMO V LENSES BRING THE
CLASSIC QUALITIES OF THE PRIMOS TO DIGITAL
CINEMATOGRAPHY WHILE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE OPTICAL
CLARITY AND PRODUCTION CONVENIENCE OF THE DIGITAL
FORMAT.
Patent-pending modifications on the Primo V eliminate coma,
astigmatism (vertical and horizontal focus differences), and other
aberrations caused by the extra layers of glass in digital cameras. The
image from a Primo V has sharper corners, a flatter field, and exhibits
greater balance from Center to edge than lenses that are not optimized
for digital capture. At the same time, the characteristics of the classic
Primos serve to counter the hyper-sharpness often associated with
digital capture.
Primo V lenses are compatible with any digital camera equipped with PL or
Panavision 35 mount systems. The Primo V lenses retain the essential Primo
character so you can seamlessly intercut imagery from Primo V and standard
Primo lenses. And since the internal transports and mechanics of the Primo V
lenses retain the familiar Primo feel, DPs and camera operators face very little
learning curve.
Primo V lenses come in focal lengths of 14.5mm, 17.5mm, 21mm, 27mm, 35mm,
40mm, 50mm, 75mm, and 100mm, with widest apertures of 1.9 and close focus
distance of 24 inches for all lengths.

PANAVISION PRIMO PRIME
LENSES
PRIMO PRIME LENSES
Panavisions Academy Award winning series of Primo
Prime lenses combine high contrast and resolution, even
field illumination, and negligible veiling glare, ghosting,
and distortion. Primo lenses intercut seamlessly with
other lenses in the Primo line, and are designed for use
with film and digital cameras.
The standard (SL) series of Primo Prime lenses include
focal lengths ranging from 10mm to 150mm with widest
apertures of T1.9. Close focusing distances range from 2
feet to 5 feet 9 inches. All Primo Primes are compatible
with the 1.4x Primo Extender which reduces your
exposure by a full stop.
Primo Close Focus Lenses
Panavision offers a set of close focus prime lenses ranging from
14.5mm to 35mm, with widest apertures of T1.9 and close
focusing distances ranging from 7 inches to 11 inches. This can
translate to close focus of 2 inches or less from the front of the
lens. The Primo Close Focus 14.5mm is compatible with a Wide
Angle Adapter to create an 11.5mm wide-angle lens.
Primo Classic Series Prime Lenses
The Primo Classic Series offers cinematographers the ability to select
between high-contrast performance and the more classic soft focus.
The colour and performance match perfectly with other Primo Prime
lenses, provide close-to-macro focusing (with expanded focus scales),
and accept one screw-on rear gel filter.
These Classic Series lenses offer focal lengths ranging from 21mm to
125mm. Five of these lenses (21mm, 27mm, 35mm, 50mm, and
100mm) utilize legacy glass designs with new mechanics, all with a
speed of T1.9 and close focusing distances ranging from 9 inches
to 16 inches. Another set of these lenses (24mm, 30mm, 65mm,
85mm, and 125mm) utilise new glass and mechanics with speeds of
either T1.7 or T1.8 and close focus distances ranging from 10 inches
to 25 inches.
All Classic Series lenses use cam drive mechanisms with expanded focus
scales from 3 feet to infinity and provide continuous close-to-macro
focusing. Two of the longer lenses (100mm & 125mm) feature linear
bearing technology, and all of the lenses accept one screw-on rear gel
filter holder.

The 24mm, 30mm, 65mm, 85mm, and 125mm focal length lenses offer a
special feature called soft effect, and allows for either high contrast
performance or the classic soft focus, deep field effect. Operators can
select this effect manually or with a motor, and have the option of
switching between these effects within a shot.
The soft effect uses a calibrated scale, which for constant object
magnification gives the same result for different focal length lenses. This
optical feature affects objects at or near the best focus, leaving shadow
detail and blacks intact and preserving highlights with minimal blooming.

PANAVISION PRIMO ZOOM
LENSES
PRIMO ZOOMLENSES
The Primo Zoom Lens family combines high contrast and resolution, even
field illumination, and negligible veiling glare, ghosting, and distortion. The
overall performance of the Primo Zoom lenses enables seamless
intercutting of shots from primes to zooms. The flexibility and excellent
imaging performance of the Primo Zooms makes them suitable for both
zoom shots and fixed focal length shots. Like all Primo lenses, focus, T-
stop, and zoom scales are engraved on both sides of the lens, and zero-
backlash mechanics and large diameter scale rings allow precision focus
pulling.
Low Ratio Primo Zooms
15-40mm Primo Zoom -- PZW
27-75mm Primo Zoom -- PZM
60-125mm Primo Zoom -- PNZT
Introduced in 2013, this set of Primo zooms incorporates the latest
optical and mechanical design and fabrication techniques, such as
aspheric surfaces and linear bearings. These three zooms cover a full
range of focal lengths with some overlap for flexibility with
performance equal to or surpassing most prime lenses. Lower ratios,
modest apertures, and advanced aspheres provide superior imaging in a
compact form factor. Multiple moving groups ensure consistent
performance throughout the zoom and focus ranges and maintain
constant aperture at all zoom and focus positions.

The 15-40mm and 27-75mm lenses offer well controlled breathing

throughout the zoom range with close focus rated at 2 feet. Their light
weight and compact size make them well suited for handheld or
Steadicam work. The 60-125mm lens rounds out the longer end of the
series, with close focuses to 3 feet and a macro magnification ratio of
1:7.
17.5-75mm Primo 4:1 Zoom - SLZ
The 4:1 Primo Zoom is a T2.3 lens with a focal range of 17.5-75mm. Its speed makes it
an ideal choice for low level, night cinematography. The lens maintains a constant
aperture at all zoom and focus positions with continuous close focusing to macro 1:6
with a minimum distance of 2 feet. The SLZ delivers minimal breathing when focusing
at short focal lengths. With the optional Primo 1.4x extender it becomes a 24.5-
105mm, T3.2 lens with a 1:5 macro magnification and a close focus distance of 2 feet
19-90mm
10 inches. Primo Zoom -- PCZ
The Primo Compact Zoom offers high performance in a conveniently small package. At
8 inches in length, the PCZ is T2.8 with a focal length range of 19-90 mm. Advanced
design and use of aspheric surfaces enable high optical performance with an extended
focal range and well-controlled breathing. The PCZ maintains a constant aperture at all
zoom and focus positions, with continuous close focusing to 2 1/4 feet.
24-275mm Primo 11:1 Zoom SLZ11
The 11:1 Primo Zoom is a high ratio, high performance zoom with an aperture
of T2.8 and a focal length range of 24-275mm. The lens maintains a constant
aperture at all zoom and focus positions and has continuous close focusing to
macro 1:3.5 with a minimum distance of 4 feet. There is minimal breathing
when focusing at short focal lengths (24mm-60mm). With the optional Primo
1.4x extender, the lens becomes a 34-385mm, T4 lens with a 1:2.5 macro
magnification and close focus distance of 4 feet 1 inch.
135-420mm Primo 3:1 Zoom SLZ3
The 3:1 Primo Zoom is a high speed, high performance telephoto zoom with an
aperture of T2.8 and a focal length range of 135-420mm. The lens maintains a
constant aperture at all zoom and focus positions. The SLZ3 has continuous
close focusing to macro 1:7 with a minimum distance of 8 feet with minimal
breathing when focusing at short focal lengths (135mm-200mm). The optional
Primo 1.4x extender converts this lens to a 190-590mm, T4 lens with a 1:5
macro magnification and close focus distance of 8 feet 7 inches.
