Volcanoes!

Introduction unit

By Ms. Green
Objective: To learn about the different types of volcanoes,
how they form, what causes them, and what kind of effects they
have.

LETS GET LEARNING

What is a Volcano?
A volcano is a mountain where
molten rock erupts from the
interior of the earth.

PENCIL AND GET READY TO TAKE
NOTES!!!

How are Volcanoes Formed?
There are 3 layers that make up the
planet Earth.
The Crust: about 18 miles thick, this is the outer
layer of the Earth, we live on this layer!
The Mantle: about 1,800 miles thick, this is the
middle layer of the Earth.
The Core: this is the innermost layer.

Volcanoes form when magma from the mantle travels to the surface of the Earth.
When the magma reaches the surface and becomes lava, it flows out along with ash
deposits. After several volcanic eruptions, the volcano will get larger and larger.
What are
the 1) Lava Volcanoes
2) Cinder Cone
Different 3) Composite Volcano
Types of 4) Shield Volcano
Volcanoes?
Lava Volcanoes
Lava domes are
formed when
erupting lava is too
thick to flow and
makes a steep-
sided mound as
the lava piles up
near the volcanic
Cinder Cone
Circular or oval cones
that the mantle
made up of small
fragments of lava
from a single vent
that have been
blown into the air,
cooled and fallen
around the vent.
Composite Volcano
Steep-sided
volcanoes
composed of many
layers of volcanic
rocks, usually made
from high-viscosity
lava, ash and rock
debris.
Shield Volcano
Shaped like a
bowl or shield in
the middle with
long gentle
slopes made by
basaltic lava
flows.
The Ring of
Fire!
The Ring of Fire is an area on
Earth where there are frequent
earthquakes and volcanic
eruptions around the Pacific
Ocean. The Ring of Fire has 452
volcanoes. This is about half of
the world's volcanoes. 90% of
the earthquakes on Earth occur
on the Ring of Fire. Most of the
largest earthquakes occur here

2) Imagine that you are a travel agent. You need to convince

people to visit a volcano on their next summer vacation. Create
a brochure that will convince people to do this.
