Comparing the Points per Game of FC Barcelona and Manchester

United

Joe Schurer and Ian Martin

Introduction and Hypothesis
The goal of this project was to compare the points per game of two of
the most popular soccer teams in Europe, FC Barcelona and Manchester
United. Our group wanted to compare how these two teams played in
their different leagues.

Our claim was that the points per game of FC Barcelona will be greater
than the points per game of Manchester United. We chose this claim
because FC Barcelona is the champion of the Spanish League and
Manchester United is one of a few teams that contest the championship
in the Premier League.
What test we decided to run
We ran a two-sample t-test for difference between means of

independent samples.

- a t-test was chosen because the population standard deviation is

unknown

- we assumed that population variances were not equal

- samples were independent because both teams competed in different

leagues
Data Collection
To collect the data necessary to run the test, we recorded the number of
points that FC Barcelona scored in every match in the Spanish league
and the number of points that Manchester United scored in the English
Premier League.

The data was entered into excel and random numbers were used to
select a list of 30 matches.
Calculations
H0: 1 2

Ha:: 1 > 2 (claim)

=.05

invT(,d.f.)
standardized test statistic t =
invT(1-.05,29) = 1.699126996 4.518341079

The invT function yields the critical value The formula to calculate the t
which defines the rejection region. Once requires the mean, standard
the standardized test statistic t is deviation, and number of
calculated if it falls into the rejection data values from each
region then we can reject H0. sample.
Conclusions
The results of the test place the standardized test statistic t within the

rejection region. We can reject the claim of the null hypothesis and say

that there is enough evidence to support the claim that the points per

game of FC Barcelona are greater than the points per game of

Manchester United.
