Review on Development of Wheelchair cum Stretcher
International Journal of Research in Advent Technology,
Vol.3, No.2, February 2015 E-ISSN: 2321-9637

Hospitals having limitations for the use fully automated

beds and wheelchair/stretcher.
Propose a new design of wheelchair cum stretcher for
patient handling.
Cost of such type of wheelchair cum stretcher will
affordable and it will be beneficial for patient handling.

SYSTHESIS OF TROLLEY CUM WHEELCHAIR FOR
PATIENT HANDLING

No. 8 August 2011 631.

In recent survey found that, 38% of nursing staffs suffer work-

related back injuries.
12% of nursing staffs consider leaving nursing due to low
back pain at average age 39.
This paper is an attempt to synthesize a trolley cum
wheelchair.

Mohan Kumar R., Lohit H. S., Manas Ranjan Mishra, Md.
Basheer Ahamed; Design of Multipurpose Wheel Chair
for Physically Challenged and Elder People
sastech 107 Volume 11, Issue 1, Apr 2012

Patients needs to be lifted up and helped to remove the

dress and make them defecate.
existing wheel chair creates repetitive stress injury if the
patient is sitting for a long time.
No solution in the existing design to make ease of shifting
of patient to transportation vehicle.
7

INTRODUCTION

Wheelchairs are the most commonly used medical equipment for

the transportation of patients.

Transferring the patients from wheelchair to stretcher or to the

medical bed is always an issue for the attendant or nurse.

Understanding the various issues regarding the mobility equipment

and introducing a better design will be an asset for the medical field
and a helping hand for disabled individuals.
8

Problem Statement
It is very difficult to transfer a patient from a seating position as on a
wheelchair to a lying position as on a stretcher by using Existing
mobility aids.

Existing alternatives are very expensive.

9

Scope Of The Project

A novel equipment (wheelchair cum bed) facilitates the disabled

patients mobility which can be used in the Indian hospitals.

In our project we try to make use of a simple mechanism powered

by a battery which considerably reduces the cost. So it would find
great application in hospitals and other healthcare firms.
10

OBJECTIVE
To facilitate easy transfer of patient from wheelchair to stretcher.

To reduce the cost of already existing expensive equipment used

for patient handling.

To smoothen patient handling in hospitals.

MOTORIZED WHEEL CHAIR FOR PHYSICALLY

DISABLED PERSON WITH LIFTING MODEL

1) Stretcher 2) Wheelchair
15

WORKING PRINCIPLE
Operated through the mechanical and Pnuematic setup
Pnuematic cylinder and solinoid valve control the position of back
support and leg support.
DC motor control the movement

Equipment is splitted in to 3 parts.

(Change)Top, Bottom and centre plate linked through a mechanical hinge
setup

The stretcher can easily change to the wheel chair by controlling air
flow from pneumatic cylinder using solenoid valve.

Rear wheels of the model are coupled with motor which gives drive to
the wheel chair hence it can move from one place to another.
16

ADVANTAGES
Relatively less cost

Less floor space required

Compatible

Reliable

No requirement of skilled persons to operate

Can be adjusted to different comfort positions

17

LIMITATIONS
Compare with hydraulic system it is less efficient.

The battery should be charged often.

18

APPLICATION
It is very useful in hospitals.

It is very helpful for physically handicapped people.
