tumors

Tumors
abnormal masses, lumps,
or swelling

Skin Tumors
originating from the skin
and could arise from
Epidermis, Dermis
Definiti
on
Soft tissue tumors
These are tumors affecting the
tissues arising
from the mesoderm.
Could arise from any of the
following:
1.Connective tissues
2.Glands
3.Muscle
4.Nerves

Folliculitis
starts when hair follicles are
damaged by friction from
clothing, blockage of the follicle,
or shaving.
bacteria Staphylococcus.
Symptoms
rash , itching, and pimples or
pustules near a hair follicle in
the neck, groin, or genital
Folliculi
tis
Treatment
Hot, moist compresses may
promote drainage
of the affected follicles.
Antibiotics
Furuncle
an infection of the pilosebaceous unit, also
involves the sebaceous gland.
begins as a small, tender, red nodule that
becomes painful and
fluctuant.
Frequently, pus will spontaneously drain, and
often the furuncle will resolve on its own.
Carbun
cle
defined as multiple furuncles grouped together.
usually involves the deeper layers of the skin.
large, red nodule that is hot and may have visible
layers of pus just
beneath the surface of the skin.
Cellulit

is
is a common skin infection caused
by bacteria.
Staphylococcus and streptococcus
Skin in the infected area will become
red, hot,
irritated, and painful
Absces
A collection of pus s
in any part of the body which
cause swelling and inflammation around it.
Abscesses occur when an area of tissue becomes
infected and the body's immune system tries to
fight it.
Necrotizing soft tissue
infection
rare but severe type of bacterial infection
It can destroy the muscles, skin, and
underlying tissue.
necrotizing soft tissue infection is due to
S. pyogenes,
called flesh-eating bacteria
Dermoid cysts
Are teratomatous cysts usually lined by
epidermis and skin appendages.
They often contain hair, and calcified bone
or teeth
Approximately 1% of these tumors have
malignant elements, usually squamous
cell carcinoma.
Usually found in the head or neck, and
sometimes on the
face.
Dermoid cysts
Treatment
To remove by incision directly over the cyst and
attempt remove it completely.
BASAL CELL CARCINOMA
Most common form of skin cancer.
Most frequently due to sun exposure.
Type :
1. noduloulcerative-most common
2. superficial-mimics eczema
3. pigmented-maybe mistaken as melanoma
4. morpheaform-plaquelike lesion with
telangiectesia
5. keratotic-basosquamous carcinoma
Types
1.
Noduloulcerativ
e
most common
BCC
Usually seen on
face
2.
Superficial/Multicentric/Multifoca
l BCC
Usually seen on the trunk as
plaque
3. Pigmented
Contain brown or black pigment;
grows slowly
4.morpheaform/sclerosing
BCC
most aggressive
Usually seen on face
or neck
5.keratotic/basosquamous
carcinoma
Treatm
ent
Local removal with electrodessication
and curettage
Given to low risk tumor
Scrape off the cancer down to the dermis
Excision
which offers the advantage of histologic
control,
is usually selected for more aggressive
tumors or those in
high-risk locations.
Radiation therapy
Topical
SQUAMOUS CELL
CARCINOMA

Predisposing Factors
Fair complexion
Chronic UV exposure
Previous burn or other scar ie.scar
carcinoma
Exposure to inorganic arsenic or
radiation therapy
Actinic keratosis is a premalignant
Types
1. Bowens disease
Erythematous patch or plaque often
with scale ,
non-invasive
limited to epidermis and epidermal
appendages
2. Scar
Carcinoma
sudden change in previous stable
scar esp. if ulceration or nodules
appear
3. Verrucous
carcinoma
Most commonly in plantar aspect of
the foot
Low grade malignancy but maybe
mistaken as
common wart
Treatment
Surgical excision
Radiation therapy
Metastases are treated with
lymph node dissection,
irradiation, or both.
Cryosurgery , Electrodesiccation and
Curettage have been used successfully for
premalignant lesions and small primary
tumors
Systemic chemotherapy combinations that
include cisplatin may also be palliative in
