Can You Read....?
So how does it feels like?
- If you were to read for information, are you happy
for not able to read it?

- For the remedial pupils or pupils that are having

learning disabilities to read, they may feel the
same disappointment.
Before we are able to read...we
must know...?
- The symbols (letters)

- Sound of the letter

- Word
What is PHONICS
Phonics involves the relationship between
sounds and their spellings.
A method of teaching reading based on
the sounds of letters, groups of letters,
and syllables.
Phonics instruction goal is to teach
students the most common sound-spelling
relationships so that they can decode, or
sound out, words.
This decoding ability is a crucial element
in reading success.
What is PHONICS
Phonics-based methods of teaching
reading are commonly contrasted with
whole language approaches, which
emphasize learning whole words in
meaningful contexts.

Why Phonics ?
Fastest way to learn to read
-learning the code is the quickest way to
learn how to read accurately and
independently

Better speller
-Pupils are better equipped to apply their
prior knowledge on letter sound
recognition and sound spelling patterns
Why Phonics ?
Less rote memorization
-phonics make use of prior knowledge (the
sound spelling relationship) to apply to
new learning.
Why Phonics ?
Works better for Ps with learning
disabilities/remedial readers
-remedial readers have strengths to build
upon
- Phonemic awareness helps the Ps with
auditory and visual style of learning
Why Phonics ?
Builds self- esteem
- Ps can see their improvement in
recognising the phonemes and apply in
their reading skill.
