Process Description
Carbonating tower is a reactor in which CO2 reacts with ammoniated brine to form
crystals of sodium bicarbonate.
NaCl (aq) + NH3 + H2O + CO2 NaHCO3 + NH4Cl (aq) + heat
NaCl + NH4HCO3 NaHCO3 + NH4Cl (aq) + heat
Carbonated Vat liquor(CVL) enters the tower from top
Carbon dioxide gas enters at two locations
Top entry(TE) almost at the middle of tower(40 % concentration),
Bottom entry(BE) which is mixed gas of kiln and calciner(70 % concentration).
The unreacted gases pass from the top as TW Exit Gas.
Cooling boxes facilitate the temperature control in the bottom section.
Sodium bicarbonate along with ammonium chloride leaves from
the bottom in the form of magma.
