What you need to know

Key Concept
There are conservative, constructive and
destructive plate boundaries, each with
characteristic volcanic and earthquake hazards.
Key Outcomes
Name the major tectonic plates
Identify and explain different plate-margin types.

RECAP - As you can see, some of the plates contain continents and
others are mostly under the ocean. The type of crust that underlies the
continents is calledcontinental crust, while the type found under the
oceans is called oceanic crust. All the plates have names, usually
referring to landmasses, oceans, or regions of the globe where they are
located.

Plate Boundaries
The border between two tectonic plates is called aboundary.
The tectonic plates move in a variety of directions due to the
convection currents below.
Some are moving toward each other, some are moving apart, and
some are sliding past each other. Because of these differences,
tectonic plate boundaries are grouped into three main types.

Divergent Convergent Conservative

Draw a small dartboard. Use
the dartboard to assess your
own learning during todays
lesson. The closer you are to
the bulls eye, the better you
feel youve achieved the
lesson outcomes!!
