WELDING EQUIPMENT
Electric arc welding is normally carried out by transformers or motor generator
sets
Their source of power being the electrical distribution system in the factory or
alternatively the engine driven generators
The transformer used cud be oil-cooled or air cooled
In case of engine-driven generators used indoors, care should be taken to ensure
adequate ventilation to dispose of the exhaust fumes
ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT

WELDING LEAD: The welding lead is connected to the electrode holder,

this cable has to be capable of carrying the full welding current without
overheating and must be sufficiently flexible and robust

WELDING RETURN: this cable returns all the welding current to the
welding set

WELDING EARTH: The earth should be as near to the work as possible,

but the choice of earthing depends on the welding return circuit. However with
the welding earth applied at the source of supply a condition can arise in the
event of a break in the welding return whereby some or all of the welding
current returns to the supply by other paths while welding is continued.
ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT

ELECTRICAL JOINTS:
When welding is carried out one has to ensure for adequate capacity cables
for the welding lead, welding return and welding earth and also to avoid poor
joints or connections
If a cable is joined throughout its length, coupling should be effected by plug
and socket cable connectors or efficient cable joints and not by nuts and bolts
which often work loose, become corroded and result in an inefficient circuit
with danger to personnel and equipment.
On multi-operator equipments the use of distribution boxes is recommended.
These ensure good electrical connections and avoid hazards to personnel.
Clamps used as return and earth clamps should operate on the vice principle
Cables should not be dragged over floors, but this happens quite a lot in
industries, to reduce the ill effects of such happpenings, the cables need to be
checked and maintained every now and then
ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT

ELECTRODE HOLDER:
such holders should be of sufficient capacity to hold largest of electrodes and
carry the maximum welding current without overheating.
The holder must be provide with an insulating handle, to protect operators
hand.
A fully insulated type of holder is a further advantage as this helps to prevent
inadvertent contact or short circuit between the live holder and earthed parts.
ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT

SAFETY DEVICE:
The open circuit voltage of welding systems ranges upto 100v which is
considered safe for many applications. However under certain circumstances
such as working in confined metal tanks working at height or under damp
conditions, this voltage could be a source of danger.
To avoid dangerous situations, it is advisable to fit a low voltage device to the
output side of the welding set.
This reduces the open circuit voltage to approximately half the full normal
open circuit voltage.
PRECAUTIONS AGAINST OTHER
RISKS

HELMETS AND GOGGLES: these are required for protection against

radiation, spatter and hot slag.
All helmets and hand shields are fitted with a filter glass and a protective cover
glass. The grade of this glass should be as shown in the table in the adjacent
page.
PRECAUTION AGAINST OTHE
RISKS
Arc welding Grade of Shade no.
currents (A) glass
Up to 100 EW 8 OR 9

100-300 EW 10 OR 11

300-500 EW 12, 13 OR 14

Over 500 EW 15 OR 16
PRECAUTION AGAINST OTHER
RISKS

SCREENS: all electric welding operations should be screened to prevent the

rays of the arc from affecting other persons working in the vicinity. They can
be either fixed or portable.
The surface of screens should have a matt finish to reduce reflected light
Ventilation: wherever welding is performed adequate ventilation is necessary,
especially when welding in confined space.
Particular care should be taken when welding galvanized materials as inhaling
the fumes given off can cause temporary sickness.
Such fumes have to be sucked out by exhaust fans
Gases like argon, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc, which are used in gas shielded
process involve certain hazards:
- there is no practical way of detecting presence of argon or nitrogen
- argon and carbon dioxide are heavier than air and so will accumulate in the
bottom of a vessel which may appear safe because the top is open
- the gases are odourless
PRECAUTIONS AGAINST OTHER
RISKS

Radiographic inspection:
Examination of welds by x-rays is now common practice and personnel
undertaking this work are usually fully aware of the implications and the
precautions necessary. However harmful effects are delayed and at the time
when the harm is being done no one can either see or feel the radiations.
The first and foremost precaution is to keep everybody not engaged in the
radiography work away from the danger zone.
The precautions to be taken by those engaged in the actual inspection are not
the concern of th welder or supervisor other than to adhere strictly to the
instructions of the specialized technician in charge of the radio-graphic
inspection work.
SUMMARY

Do:
Make sure of adequate ventilation of equipment, operator and material to be
welded
Make sure that the insulation of cables and ancillary equipment is in good
condition
Make sure that all electrical joints are sound
Make sure that the welding equipment and the work to be welded is
adequately earthed
Wear adequate protective clothing
Use hand shield , helmet or correct goggles.
Select the correct grade of frlter glass for the job.
Turn off gas cylinder valves when not in use.
Open cylinder valve slowly.
Respect warning notices posted during rafiographic inspection work.
SUMMARY

DONT:
Never take risks
Never weld near flammable material
Never to use an engine driven generator in a closed confined building unless
the exhaust gases are led outside
Never should anybody attempt to repair a tank or other vessel that has held
combustible material until proper precautions have been taken to ensure
safety
Never use Weld material cleaned with trichloroethylene until it is absolutely
dry. Never Weld galvanized or other coated metals without taking the correct
precautions.
Never Use a compressed gas cylinder as a work support. Dont Get too close
to x-ray or y-ray equipment when in use
