Lecture-00
Course Objective
To introduce principles of communication systems and methods used in
modulating and demodulating signals in order to carry information from
a source to a destination.
This course covers the:
Basic concepts of communication systems and it serves as a
foundation course for subsequent courses in communication theory.
Core concepts of analog and digital modulation techniques.
Tradeoffs in designing communication systems to efficiently utilize
the communication resources.
Behavior of communication systems in the presence of noise.
Basics of information theory.

Introduction to communication systems and revision of fundamental concepts of
signals and systems
Amplitude Modulation and Demodulation(DSB, DSB-SC, SSB, VSB, QAM)
Carrier Acquisition , Phase lock loop (PLL)
Angle Modulation Schemes, Concept of instantaneous frequency, generation of
modulated signals, spectral analysis of angle modulation schemes,
Demodulation of angle modulation.
Introduction to Digital Communications: Sampling theory, Formatting,
Encoding, Waveform encoding (PCM, DPCM, DM).
Baseband Modulation: Binary Pulse Modulation, M-ary Pulse Modulation,
Probability of Error in M-ary pulse Modulation, Pulse Shaping, ISI, Signal
Space.
Digital modulation schemes (ASK, FSK, PSK).
Performance of analog and digital modulation schemes in the presence of
channel distortion and noise.
Introduction to information theory.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
After successfully completing this course, the students will be
able to:
1. Describe the fundamental components required for a communication
system and understand amplitude modulation schemes (AM, DSB, DSB-
SC, SSB, VSB, QAM), carrier signal acquisition techniques, and Phase
locked loop (PLL). (C1-PLO1)
2. Perform and analyze different Angular modulation schemes (PM, FM)
over different information signals. (C3-PLO1)
3. Understand sampling theory and conversion between digital and analog
signals and describe fundamentals of information theory, describe and
analyze baseband and digital modulation schemes (ASK, FSK, PSK) and
understand symbol detection techniques. (C3-PLO1)
4. Describe the behavior of analog and digital communication systems in the
presence of channel distortions and noise. (C4-PLO2)
5. Use modern tools and training boards and implement and analyse through
tools such as Matlab. (P3-PLO5)

Introduction to communication systems: Fundamental terms and definitions,
information, message signal, analog and digital signals, Elements of
communication systems (Transmitter, Channel, Receiver), performance measure
and design tradeoffs, signal transmission through a linear system and signal
distortion over communication channel.
Modulation: Amplitude modulation and demodulation, carrier acquisition,
angle modulation schemes, concept of instantaneous frequency, generation of
modulated signals, spectral analysis of angle modulation schemes, demodulation
of angle modulation.
