What is Viscosity?
Viscosity may be defined as
Internal shear resistance between the layers of
fluid
Property of liquid which controls the rate of
flow.

The unit of viscosity is Poise.

1 poise = dyne . sec
cm2
= 0.1 N . s
m2
Viscometers
For Measuring the viscosity we use
following types of viscometers.
Tube type viscometer
Rotational type viscometer
Falling sphere viscometer

Exact Procedures for viscosity

determinations are available in the
standards of the American Standards
for Testing Material (ASTM).

Principle of Falling Ball
Viscometer
It tells the viscosity of liquid by
measuring the rate of fall of small
balls.
When the ball move through
viscometer, then forces acting on the
ball are
Gravitational Force (mg)
Buoyant Force (FB)
Viscous Force (FV)
The sum of all above forces must be equal to

Working with Viscometer
Procedure
1. Fill the Viscometer with particular liquid.
2. A small amount of cotton wool is placed in the
top of the capillary tube if the tube is left full for
any length of time.
3. Use three balls of different diameter with each
liquid (sizes are 1.59mm, 2.38mm, 3.175mm).
Put them into viscometer and measure the time
of fall of balls.
4. Using the hydrometer, obtain the specific
gravity of each liquid.
Working with Viscometer
Calculation
Viscosity of Liquid = = 2 r2 g (b - f)
9u
Where r = Radius of sphere
g = Acceleration due to gravity
b = Density of ball (for steel 7850 kg/m3)
f = Density of fluid
u = Mean velocity of fall

u = Distance through which ball falls = 0.075 m/s

Average time t
