Summary

Amway Center opened in Orlando is the first LEED Gold certified professional
basketball arena in the country. The management made sure that they brought
the most sustainable features to the infrastructure of the center. They have 40%
less water than in similar areas and rainwater & air-conditioning condensations
are captured for irrigation. They recycles steel, wood and construction waste and
use environment friendly building materials and saves 20% energy with the use
of high efficient heating and cooling system Factors like sustainability in site,
water efficiency, energy, materials/resources, indoor environmental quality and
design innovation helped them in achieving their LEED certification. With all the
green practices done , they were able to reduce their operating costs.

Qn.1 Find a LEED-certified building in your area and compare its
features to those of the Amway Centre.
Infosys has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
(LEED) India 'Platinum' rating for its Software Development Block 2 in
Thiruvananthapuram, India.
Platinum certification is the highest level of green building certification under
the Indian Green Building Council's LEED rating system. LEED Green Building
Rating System is a globally accepted benchmark for design, construction, and
operation of high performance green buildings.
Some of the key features of this building include:
Water efficiency:
Infosys: The building uses 55 % less water due to efficient plumbing fixtures
and recycled waste water.
Amway: There is 40% less water usage (saving 800,000 gallons per year),
mostly through use of high-efficiency restrooms, including low-flow, dual-flush
toilets.
Energy efficiency:
Infosys: An efficient building envelope, and energy-efficient lighting and HVAC
systems helps this building exceed the global American Society of Heating,
Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards by 36 %.
Amway: There is 20% energy savings (about $750,000 per year) with the use
Indoor environment quality:
Infosys: The fresh air provided in this building is 30 % better than global
ASHRAE standards.
Amway: The roof of the building is designed to minimize daytime heat gain
by using reflective and insulated materials.
Efficient use of material and resources:
Infosys: Recycled materials account for more than 14 % of the building.
These include cement, steel, aluminium, medium-density fibreboard, glass,
gypsum, and carpeting. 20% of the total construction material was
manufactured regionally, which reduced pollution from long-haul transport.
Amway: The centre used environmental friendly building materials and
recycled 83% of the wood, steel, and concrete construction waste that would
have ended up in a landfill.
Qn.2 What does a facility need to do to earn the gold LEED rating? What
other ratings exist?
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is one of the most
popular green building certification programs used worldwide. Developed by the
non-profit U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
Buildings can qualify for four levels of certification:
Certified: 4049 points
Silver: 50-59 points
Gold: 60-79 points
Platinum: 80 points and above

One hundred possible credit points are distributed across six credit categories:
location and transportation, materials and resources, water efficiency, energy
and atmosphere, sustainable sites, and indoor environmental quality. Up to ten
more points can be earned for innovation in design (6 points) and regional
priority (4 points). Points are allocated based on potential for goodmore points
go for actions with the least environmental impact and most human benefit.
There are three primary Rating systems in India.
GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment).
IGBC (Indian Green Building Council).
BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency).
Qn.3 Why did the Orlando Magic decide to go green in its new
building?
Since the Amway Centre is a benchmark on being a green building, it
receives good publicity, especially with how they are conscious of the
community and environment, which is always good for business.
Furthermore, they have tremendous savings with their utilities.
The Orlando Magics Amway Centre saves millions on their electricity bill
because they have state of the art technology which includes (the three
Rs) reflective and heat insulated roof to keep the heat out, thus cutting
their need for electricity to cool the building.
The condensation from the A/C and rainwater are captured, giving the
building free water to irrigate with. They also have highly efficient
bathrooms, which cut the total water usage by 40%, and this building has
many more green aspects to it as well as that keep the operating costs
extremely low.
Also, when constructing the actual building they recycled just about every
material that they could. Going green for them, was just good business
overall.
They undertook go green strategy to create the possible benefits such as:

1.Environmental Benefits:
Reduce wastage of water
Conserve natural resources
Improve air and water quality
Protect biodiversity and ecosystems

2.Social Benefits:
Improve quality of life
Improve occupant health and comfort

Customers are looking at how a business is taking responsibility for its impact on the
environment. By incorporating environmental sustainability into their business models,
companies are able to maximize their financial gain. Many companies benefit from an audit
of energy usage and the energy efficiency of their commercial buildings. Green Friendly
building help to improve consumers' perception of the company. It will also decrease the
operating costs.
Qn.4 Elaborate on the various regulations and industry standards to be adhered
by firms?
US-EPA has written guidelines for companies which includes:
Ascertaining environmental cost.
Identifying opportunities to reduce environmental impact.
Evaluating benefits of alternatives.
Decide, implement and monitor solutions.
European Union Emissions Trading System (EUETS) :
limit set by European Union on green house gas emission
In India
ISO 14000-Enviornmental management system

Standards

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) : national Standards Body of India working

under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution,
Government of India
Indian standard institute (ISI) mark : certification mark for industrial products
in India. The mark certifies that a product conforms to the Indian Standard,
mentioned as IS:xxxx on top of the mark
Fruit products order (FPO) mark : certification mark mandatory on all
processed fruit products sold in India such as packaged fruit beverages, fruit-
jams, crushes and squashes, pickles, etc. The FPO mark guarantees that the
product was manufactured in a hygienic 'food-safe' environment, thus ensuring
that the product is fit for consumption.
Bharat stage emission standards : emission standards instituted by the
Government of India to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal
combustion engine equipment, including motor vehicles.
International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association
(IEEE-SA)
