Fermi Gamma Ray

Telescope
By: Nick Milas and Nate Saar
History of the Fermi
Originally known as the Gamma Ray
Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST)

Costed 690 million USD

Name changed to the Fermi Gamma

Ray Telescope after Italian Scientist
Enrico Fermi

No technical difficulties since launch

fermi.gsfc.nasa.gov
Launch and Location

Launched June 11, 2008 by NASA

Floridas Cape Canaveral Air Force Station

Follows a continuous orbit above the Earths atmosphere

The launch and construction of the telescope was funded by NASA,

the U.S. Department of Energy, and various academic institutions.

Partners in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and the U.S.

also helped in funding the mission
Spectrum

Telescope made for High Energy

Gamma Ray Light, located on
Electromagnetic Spectrum

Gamma Ray Light

-Most extreme form of Radiation

-Invisible to human eye

-Key to discovering more about

our ever expanding universe
Other Similar Telescopes

Telescopes can be found in space or on Earth.

The Fermi Gamma Ray Telescope is found
orbiting the Earth.

There are only a few telescopes in space that

sense gamma rays. For example the Swift
Gamma Ray Burst Explorer was launched 4
years before the Fermi.

Fermi has given the best ever view of gamma

rays, which can reveal some of the most
mysterious occurrences in the universe such as
black holes.
How It Works
Two Major Components

1.Large Area Telescope(LAT)

-Made from Silicon and tungsten strips

-Determine direction of incoming

radiation

2.Gamma Ray Burst Monitor(GBM)

-Detects bursts of Gamma Radiation

from far out and space
Primary Uses

Helps physicists, astronomers, and cosmetologists in their work.

Astronomers can use to study black holes and how they work

Physicists can study subatomic particles at energies greater tha

the ones seen at ground level

Cosmetologists can gain valuable information relating to the

beginning of the universe
