Administration of

Medication
The practice of administering medication
includes the way of giving the patient the
prescribed and intended substance
needed in diagnosing, treating or
preventing any medical illness or
condition.
The preparation of any medications
begins with the order for the medication
that is usually written by a physician.
Methods in administering
medicines or drugs
a) oral
b) Parenteral
c) Inhalation
d) Topical
e) Rectal or vaginal
Oral Administration of
Medication
Administering medication through oral rote
or swallowing of medication is considered
to be the most common, easiest and
safest of the mentioned methods.
This method is believed to be more
convenient and cheaper compared to
other method.
Oral medication, also does not have to be
pure or sterile and comes in wide variety
of dosages that are available.
Parenteral Administration of
Medication
Medicines or drugs administered
through parental method are being
introduced into the patient through
injection.
This method involves needle and
syringe. All drugs and medicines
administered through parenteral must
be sterile, pure, pyrogen-free and in
liquid form.

Parenteral administration of medication
can be subcutaneous, intradermal,
intramuscular, intravenous and intrathecal
or intraspinal
A subcutaneous injection is administered as a bolus into
the subcutis, the layer of skin directly below the dermis
and epidermis, collectively referred to as the cutis.
Intramuscular (also IM or im) injection is the injection of a
substance directly into a muscle
Intravenous therapy (IV therapy or iv therapy in short) is
the infusion of liquid substances directly into a vein.
Inhalation Administration of
Medication
Inhalational medications are inhaled
through the respiratory system in the form
of gas, vapor or powder.
This method is often utilized in treating
respiratory conditions and is divided into
three types namely vaporization, gas
inhalation and nebulation.
Topical Administration of
Medications
Topical medication is applying the drugs or
medicines into the skin surface. Drugs
applied through this method serve two
purposes which are bring local or
systematic effect.
Local effects relieve itching, burning or
other skin conditions.
Rectal or vaginal Administration
of medications
Rectal or vaginal administration is a
method used with drugs that are either
inserted into the patients rectum or vagina
respectively.
Rectal method is often utilized with
patients who tend to vomit when
medicines are to be administered orally.

Proportion is a comparison of ratios.
A proportion is an equation which states
that two ratios are equal.
In a proportion, there are four numbers.
The two middle numbers are known as
mean and other two numbers are known
as extremes.
Notice that when you multiply the two
extremes and two mean, the product are
equal.
Rule: In a proportion, the product of the
means is always equal to the product of
the extremes.
Determine if each pair of ratios form a
