The Mississippi River levee system represents
one of the largest such systems found anywhere
in the world. They comprise over 3,500 miles
(5,600 km) of levees extending some 1,000 miles
(1,600 km) along the Mississippi. They average 24
feet (7 m) in height; some Mississippi levees are
as much as 50 feet (15 m) high.

Your task: countries and then write a report
entitled River Management: Choices
and impacts

Your report should include the following sections (although you may want to
add more!):
The causes of flooding
The alternative ways the rivers are managed (e.g. levees, dams, limiting
the use of the flood plain, flood defences etc)
Reasons why river management varies in different places
How managing rivers can affect people
Why different people may have different points of view about river
management (e.g. a local farmer, a politician, a local industry, a householder
and a developer wanting to build new houses).
Your opinions on managing rivers and how this affects people
Remember! The best reports will be
structured and will have your own
additional research!
