REVISION:

A tangents is a straight line

which touches a circle at only one Tang
point.

A tangent to a circle is a
straight line which is
perpendicular to the radius that
passes through the contact point

8.1.1 Identifying tangents to a circle

8.1.2 Properties of the tangent to a circle

8.1.3 Constructing tangents to a circle

8.1.4 Properties related to two tangents from a

given point outside the circle.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Constructing the tangents to a circle passing
through a point:
a) On the circumference of the circle

b) Outside the circle

) Determine the properties related to two

tangents to a circle from a given point outside
the circle.
CONSTRUCTING TANGENTS TO A
CIRCLE
Two type of tangents to a circle
a) Passing through a point on the circumference of
the circle.

b) Passing through a point outside of the circle.

CONSTRUCTING TANGENTS TO A
CIRCLE
Passing through a point on the circumference of
the circle.
Example:

In the diagram, o is the centre and P is a point on

the circumference of a circle. Construct a tangents
passing through point P.
CONSTRUCTING TANGENTS TO A
CIRCLE

P
Step 1: draw a straight line joining OP and OP is
produced to Q, where OP=QP
Step 2: construct the perpendicular bisector of OQ, which

passes through the point P, using a pair of compasses.

Step 3: the straight line RPS is the tangent to the circle

passing through a point, P on the circumference of circle.

CIRCLE
Passing through a point outside of the circle

In the diagram, O is the centre of a circle and T

is a point outside the circle. Construct two
tangents to the circle from the point T.
CONSTRUCTING TANGENTS TO A
CIRCLE
Passing through a point outside of the circle

Step 1: Join OT and bisect OT at M, the midpoint of

OT
Step 2 : Draw a circle with centre M, of radius OM,

which intersects the first circle at two point, P and Q.

Step 3: Join TP and TQ, which are the required
tangents to the circle, at P and Q respectively.
TP and Tq are the tangents to the circle from point T
TRY THIS..
In the diagram, O is the centre of a circle and K
is a point outside the circle. Construct two
tangents to the circle from the point K.

b) Angle PTO = Angle QTO = xo
c) Angle POT = Angle QOT = yo
d) Angle OPT = Angle OQT = 90o
e) Angle POQ = Angle PTQ = 1800
f) POT and QOT are congruent
QUESTION 1
EVALUATION
Draw a circle with centre O and radius 3 cm.
Mark a point P, outside the circle, such that
OP=5 cm. From P, construct tangents PQ and PR
to the circle. (Q and R are contact points of the
tangents to the circle.
