With the release of nearly seven billion metric tons of carbon
dioxide each Year and the overconsumption of fuel reserves, research for a feasible alternative fuel has intensified. Current possible alternatives, however, have not reached widespread commercialization. In light of this issue, the scientific community has recently taken interest in the unique structure of microalgae and the malleability of metabolic pathways. The purpose of this study [Hypothe is] Does nutrient stress have an overall beneficial impact on lipid accumulation?

Several studies have shown that growth rate is hindered due to the inability of cells to produce the large amount of nitrogen- containing membrane lipids necessary for growth. recorded that production is better increased in conjunction with other techniques The limits in my research include the lack of access to research due to the high number of papers requiring payment. This has widely restricted access to useful, potentially important articles that could help support the hypothesis. [Outcom ] me to The Independent Research program has allowed explore the field I am interested in further without interference with other classes. Through this program, I have gained a deeper understanding of microalgal biofuels, the labwork conducted, and what I might possibly do in the future. s In addition, I have learned that it is possible to produce [Backgro d] Microalgal Biofuels- Fuels produced from the products of Microscopic algae Triacylglycerol- Molecules made up of glycerol and three fatty acids Primarily used for energy storage Lipid Accumulation- Production of lipids Nutrient Stress- Incurring a reaction by [Backgro Some traits of microalgae: d] Account for a large portion of productivity in marine communities Play significant role in the recirculation of carbon in oceans Rapid growth rate Able to synthesize large amounts of TAGs and [Results [Backgro Some forms of stress: d] pH conditions Salinity Temperature Light Nutrients (ex. Hydrogen peroxide, nitrogen, phosphate, etc.) [Produc My research paper had a primary focus on nitrogen deprivation as nitrogen plays an important role in the metabolic structure of microalgae. I am submitting my paper to NHJS in order to help inspire more students to do research on microalgal biofuels in hopes that more students may want to help research the metabolic structure of microalgae. By doing so, we Nitrogen deprivation has resulted in: A significant increase in lipid accumulation Decrease in membrane lipids Decrease in photosynthetic capability It has been suggested that, as nitrogen is in many essential membrane lipids, microalgae turns lipid production toward TAG production in order to conserve energy. Nitrogen deprivation has shown: 27.5%-37.3% increase of neutral lipids in cell dry weight in transgenic cells Significant up-expression of genes relating to lipid production Upexpression of genes relation to carbon fixation, hinting at increase capabilities Hurdles in Production: Requires large area of land Crop protection costs Extraction costs Need higher productivity Insufficient knowledge of metabolic structure
