Variable General Student Characteristics
Age:
Students ages will range from 9-11 years old.
Interest:
Most of the students are open to learning new ideas, but keeping
students engaged will be important!
Attitudes:
Students in this age group are often trying to fit in with their peers.
Again, keeping information relevant to their lives will help them stay
positive about the assignments.
Entry Competencies
Students will have to be able to read on their own. This is a
skill that should have started in kindergarten and progressed
throughout the other school years. Some students will be
higher level readers than others, but it should not affect the
lesson.
Students will have to be able to hold conversations with peers
in small groups. The teacher will model this and maintain
clear expectations of behavior throughout the year, so
students will have enough practice to do this.
Entry Competencies
Students will have to know how to relate the idea of cause
and effect to their life. In order for them to engage in the
lesson, there will be practice for students so they are able to
relate the idea to their life. The teacher should model this
behavior multiple times in class.
Students will be responsible for completing their work in a
timely manner. This includes reading, writing, and discussing
the lesson with their peers. These standards will be in place
throughout the entire school year.
Learning Traits
Fourth graders ways of seeing things from others
perspectives can be difficult. The maturity level of students
will vary, but it is important to remind students that just
because it is different from what they know that it isnt
wrong.
Since the socioeconomic status varies from school to school,
district to district, county to county, state to state, and
beyond, I should consider that in my lesson planning.
Students all have different experiences that can hinder their
abilities.
Learning Traits
Students should be able to sit for 20 minutes during
instruction without a break.
Students should be able to skillfully type and write
paragraphs.
Students should be able to comprehend instructions, and ask
for clarification when needed.
