APOLLINARIANISM

Taught by Apollinaris the Younger in Syria, in about 361.


Ended by the Second General Council at Constantinople in 381.
DEFINITION

He taught that there could never be two minds that exist in one person.
He decreased the human nature of Christ and focused solely on his
divinity.
This means that he basically got rid of Christs human mind and focused on
his divine mind.

He thought that if Jesus was both God and man, then he would have
sinned.
CHURCH ACTUALLY TEACHES

The Orthodox doctrine of the hypostatic union which states that in the
single person of Christ, there are two distinct natures.
Both human nature and divine nature
Hypostatic Union- the combination of divine and human natures in the
single person of Christ.
MAIN DEFENDER OF THE CHURCH

The Second General Council is the main defender of the Church


HOW WAS THE HERESY DEFEATED?

Apollinarianism was condemned by the Second General Council at


Constantinople in 381.
