Leadership behavior, also known as leadership styles, are patterns of behavior that leaders adopt to influence followers. There are two main approaches to leadership styles - behavioral and situational. Behavioral styles can be functional and positively influence followers, or dysfunctional and ineffective. Styles are also classified based on motivation, authority, and supervision. The three main authority styles are autocratic, where the leader makes all decisions; democratic, where the group is involved in decision making; and delegative, where the leader allows the team freedom in their work.

According to Research by asaecenter, leadership style is the way a person uses power to lead other people. Research has identified a variety of leadership styles based on the number of followers. The most appropriate leadership style depends on the function of the leader, the followers and the situation.
Some leaders cannot work comfortably with a high degree of followers’ participation in decision making. Some employers lack the ability or the desire to assume responsibility. Furthermore, the specific situation helps determine the most effective style of interactions.

"Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a
vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential." Prof. Warren Bennis FORMULA OF LEADERSHIP LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOURS Leadership behaviour also known as Leadership Styles are the patterns of behaviour which a leader adopts in influencing the behaviour of his followers. These patterns emerge in the leader as he begins to respond in the same fashion under similar conditions. These styles are either based on either behavioural approach or situational approach. Behavioural Theory Leadership behaviour my be viewed in two ways: functional and dysfunctional. Functional behaviour influences followers positively. Dysfunctional behaviour is unfavourable to the followers and denotes ineffective leadership, such a behaviour may be inability to accept employees ideas, display of emotional immaturity, poor human relation etc. Behavioural Theory Leadership styles are also broadly classified based on three points of view: 1) Motivation 2) Authority 3) Supervision. Behavioural Theory 1. Motivation . On the basis of motivation leadership style can be positive or negative style. . In positive style a leader motivates his followers to work hard by offering them rewards, for example, higher bonus. . In negative styles, a leader forces his followers to work hard and punishes them for lower productivity. Behavioural Theory 2. Authority . On the basis of Authority, leadership styles are divided into three types namely I. Autocratic II. Democratic
III. Delegative (Free rein).
Autocratic In this type the leader alone determines policies and makes plans. He demands strict obedience and relies on power. The merits of this type of leadership is that, it can increase efficiency, save time, and get quick results under emergency conditions, chain of command and division of work are clear. The demerits are people are treated machine-like cogs without human dignity, one way communication without feedback and the leader receives little or no input from his sub-ordinates for his decision-making which is dangerous in the current dynamic environment. Democratic Also known as participative or person-oriented leadership. In this style, the entire group is involved in goal setting and achieving it. Workers feel ownership of the firm and its ideas. This type of leadership encourages people to develop and grow, receives information and ideas from his subordinates to make decisions, and boosts the morale of employees. Delegative (Free rein) In this style, the leader allows the team (or individual) to make the decision. Leadership is provided to the group indirectly rather than directly. Group members are presented a task to perform and are given free rein to figure out how to perform it best. The leader does not get involved unless requested. Team members are allowed all the freedom they want as long as they do not violate policy. In short, the free rein leader delegates completely. However, the leader is still responsible for the decisions that are made. THANK YOU!
