OBJECTIVE

- To describe the drug treatment of Gonorrhea

Uncomplicated gonorrhea infection
of cervix,urethra,rectum or
pharynx
Cefixime

3rd generation cephalosporin


Impair baterial cell wall synthesis
400 mg orally once a day

Ceftriaxone

3rd generation cephalosporin


MOA similar to the cefixime
250 mg given intramuscularly

If gonorrhoea is penicillin
resistant

Spectinomycin

Belongs to aminoglycoside
2 gm IM

For coexisting infections
Along with above regimens ,alternative regimens should
be given because Chlamydia trachomatis infection often
coexists

Doxycycline

Belongs to tetracycline
Interfere with the protein synthesis by binding to
bacterial ribosome
100 mg twice daily orally for 7 days

Azithromycin

Belongs to the macrolides


Similar MOA of doxycycline
Single dose of 1 gm
Azithromycin is prefer in pregnant women to
doxycycline because doxycycline is contraindicated
in pregnancy
