YEAR 5 SOLAR

SYSTEM PROJECT
By Tashlin Hellewell
OVERVIEW
This term we learned all about the Solar
System

The project went for a period of 6 weeks

THE SUN
The sun :
The sun is actually a star
Is made up of Helium and Hydrogen
The largest thing in the Solar System
150 000 km away from Earth
The core of the Sun is 15 000 degrees Celcius

MERCURY
Mercury:
Is he closest planet to the Sun
Has no known moons
59 day to make a full turn on axis
88 days to orbit the sun
2 moons in the Solar System bigger than Mercury

VENUS
Venus:
The second planet from the sun
Is sometimes called the morning or evening star
Has a molten core made of iron and metal.
It has over 100,000 volcanoes. The largest
volcano is over 5 miles high.
Venus has no moon
One day on Venus is as long as 117 earth days.

EARTH
Earth
Is the third planet from the sun
Is he only planet that has water
The only planet to have life
Takes 24 hours to turn a full axis
Takes 365 days to orbit the sun

MARS
Mars
Is nicknamed the red planet as it covered with red dust.
Mars experiences violent dust storms which continually
change its surface
Has many massive volcanoes and is home to the largest
volcano in our solar system, it stands 21km high
Has a very thin atmosphere made mostly of carbon
dioxide. Mars has many channels, plains and canyons on
the surface which could have been caused by water
erosion in the past

The gravity is very weak on Mars
spacecraft
JUPITER
Jupiter
The fifth planet from the sun
Is the largest planet in the Solar System
Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar system. It is so big
that more than 1300 Earths could fit inside it
Has thick clouds that are filled with poisonous gasses
Has a rocky core, slightly bigger than Earth but weighing
about 20 times more
Liquid hydrogen surrounds the core of Jupiter
Jupiter has many moons circling around it

SATURN
Satan
The sixth planet from the sun
Is the second biggest planet
Is the lightest planet
Has rings around it made out of rocks, ice and
dust
Rings are visible from Earth with the use of a
telescope
Has 18 moons

URANUS
Uranus
The seventh planet from the sun
First planet discovered by telescope
Is an ice giant

NEPTUNE
Neptune
Id a large planet, it is four times the size of Earth.
Has the the most violent weather in our Solar System.
Has storm ten time faster than a hurricane on Earth
Has a blue hydrogen-methane atmosphere and faint
rings.
Neptune is covered in thin white clouds which go all
around the planet.
