Atmosphere And Climate

Change
MUIDS environmental science
Atmosphere Structure
The atmosphere is a thin membrane
surrounds the entire planet.
Membrane: A protective barrier that lets
some stuff in, while keeping some things
out

There are five layers of the

atmosphere
Troposphere
Stratosphere
Mesophere
Thermosphere
Exosphere
Troposphere

The troposphere is the closest

layer to the Earth
This is the layer is the layer in
which most of the weather is
created in this layer
The troposphere is the air layer
about 17 kilometers above sea
level
Chemical Composition of the
Troposphere

The troposphere contains the

air we breath
78% of the air in the troposphere
is Nitrogen (N2)
21% of the air is oxygen (O2)
1% is a mixture of water vapor,
carbon dioxide, and methane
called.. GREENHOUSE GASES
Greenhouse gases
(AKA Heat trapping gases)

5 Major greenhouse gases

Carbon Dioxide
Methane
Nitrous Oxide
Water Vapor
Ozone

Some gases are more effective than

others in terms of trapping heat
Example: Methane can trap heat 21
times more than Carbon Dioxide.
Greenhouse gases and
the Greenhouse Effect
Greenhouse gases are a vital part of
our environment because it causes
the greenhouse effect
Greenhouse Effect is a process
which greenhouse gases trapped
some infrared (heat) in the earths
atmosphere while some bounce back
into space.
For what? To maintain the Earths
temperature and make living
possible!

Greenhouse Gases

In your groups, create a web diagram

of information you know about
greenhouse gases.
What do you know about
greenhouse gases?
Are they dangerous to us?
How do they relate to global
warming?
Greenhouse effect and Climate
Change
Due to excess greenhouse gases,
What are some effect from
less gas could escape from earths
atmosphere global warming ?
Therefore, it leads to global Ocean acidification, melting glaciers,
warming rising sea level, disruption to habitat,
frequence natural disasters, and
Global warming - is the increase of Climate change

Climate Change
the result of global warming
What is What is
weather? climate ?
Short term changes in the Climate is the average
atmosphere such as weather/temperature over a
temperature, precipitation, period of time in particular
humidity, pressure, and area
brightness WHAT IS CLIMATE
CHANGE?
It is a long term change in
the Earths average
temperature in a
particular region.

Climate Change Consequences
Climate change is affecting species both directly and indirectly.
We are now going to play a game to learn about the different ways in which
species are being affected by climate change.
1. Read the factsheet about how ten different species are affected by climate change.

2. Mix the cards up and place them face-down in a grid of four cards by five cards.

3. Take it in turns to turn over two cards and see if they match you must match a text card with the
relevant picture card.

4. If they match, you keep the cards and get another go. If they dont, turn the cards back over, keeping
them in the same place. It is then your opponents turn.

5. The winner is the person who collects the most cards.

Reading a Graph: Think-Pair-Share

1. In pairs, look at
this graph and
determine what the
X and Y axis of the
graph tells you.
2. discuss what the
graph says about
levels of carbon
dioxide in the air.

Climate Change Evidence
Prolonged seasons - The season doesnt come on time or
too early (season shift).
EX: Spring come too soon, prolonged rainy season,
winter is not coming

Severe weather - storm, flood, and drought
