COMPUTER

NETWORK
GROUP GAME:
JOURNEY THROUGH X, Y, OR Z
Students are asked to write the letters x, y and z on a
sheet of paper. Students are grouped and form their line.
Each group has its aim to reach the end of transmission
using the same letter written on a sheet of paper.
Transmission starts with the first student in each group.
Transmission of signal proceeds whenever they have the
same letters and is cutoff if they have the same letters.
The first student in the line is not allowed to use the
same letter after each transmission.
Restriction: Nobody is allowed to talk or use their hands
for the duration of the game.

COMPUTER NETWORK CONSISTS OF TWO OR
MORE COMPUTERS THAT ARE LINKED IN ORDER TO
SHARE RESOURCES (SUCH AS PRINTERS AND CD-
ROMS), EXCHANGE FILES, OR ALLOW ELECTRONIC
COMMUNICATIONS

Ethernet is a local area network used to connect

computers near one another.

Internet is a wide area network that computers far away

can connect to in order to access information.
Four Basic Types of Network

Personal Area Network (PAN)

Local Area Network (LAN)
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
Personal Area
Networks (PAN) are
networks which are
designed for personal use.
A PAN network is typically
on an area of 20 to 30 feet.
LOCAL AREA NETWORK (LAN)
IS A NETWORK THAT IS CONFINED
TO A RELATIVELY SMALL AREA.
IT IS GENERALLY LIMITED TO A
GEOGRAPHIC AREA SUCH AS A
WRITING LAB, SCHOOL, OR
BUILDING.
IS LIMITED IN SIZE, TYPICALLY
SPANNING A FEW HUNDRED
METERS, AND NO MORE THAN A
MILE
IS FAST, WITH SPEEDS FROM 10
MBPS TO 10 GBPS
LAN usually has one computer designated as
the server. It stores all of the software that
controls the network, as well as the software
that can be shared by the computers
attached to the network
Computers connected to the file server are
called workstations. The workstations can be
less powerful than the file server, and they
may have additional software on their hard
drives.
Metropolitan Area
Network (MAN)

A metropolitan area
network (MAN) is a large
computer network that
usually spans a city or a large
campus.

A MAN is optimized for a

larger geographical area than
a LAN, ranging from several
Wide Area Networks (WANs)
connect larger geographic areas,
such as Florida, the United States, or
the world. Dedicated transoceanic
cabling or satellite uplinks may be
used to connect this type of network.

The world's most popular WAN is the

Internet.
The physical topology of a
network is the actual geometric
layout of workstations.

There are several common

physical topologies, as
described below and as shown
in the illustration.
Networking Devices
Consist of, but are not limited to non-
local printers, workstations, servers,
webcams, data loggers, instruments,
dial-in devices, and, in general anything
that requires an Ethernet connection
A network that usesEthernet cablingis referred to as a
hard-wired network, while radio wave networks are called
wireless networks. Wireless networks are the least
expensive and easiest to set up because they dont require
running Ethernet cable between machines.
Ethernet Cable (LAN Cable)

Hub is a small, simple, inexpensive device that joins
multiple computers together. Many network hubs
available today support the Ethernet standard. Other
types including USB hubs also exist, but Ethernet is the
type traditionally used in home networking.
Ethernet switch is a device that gathers
the signals from devices that are
connected to it, and then regenerates a
new copy of each signal.
Routers are small physical
devices that joins multiple
networks together.
Network gateway is an
internetworking system
capable of joining together
two networks that use
different base protocols. A
network gateway can be
implemented completely in
software, completely in
hardware, or as a
combination of both.
Modem is a contraction of the
terms modulator and
demodulator.
Modems perform a simple
function: They translate digital
signals from a computer into
analog signals that can travel
across conventional phone
lines.

The modem modulates the

signal at the sending end and
demodulates at the receiving
Network Firewall protects a
computer network from
unauthorized access. Network
firewalls may be hardware
devices, software programs, or a
combination of the two. Network
firewalls guard an internal
computer network (home,
school, business intranet)
against malicious access from
the outside.
Cables are obviously used to connect communication
devices with each other to form network.
Commonly used cables are 10baseT/CAT5 , coaxial
cable, Ethernet and fiber optical cable.
Fiber optical is the most expensive as it enables the
data transfer at speed of light and mostly used by
corporate sector. Optical fiber cable is now being used in
home networking and also used as medium to connect
to internet.
Network Interface Card is a
device that connects a client
computer, server, printer or
other component to your
network. Most often, a network
interface consists of a small
electronic circuit board that is
inserted into a slot inside a
computer or printer.
Wireless Router is a
device that performs the
functions of a router and
also includes the
functions of a wireless
access point. It is used to
provide access to
the Internet or a
private computer
network.
