A cone has a circular base and a vertex that is not in
the same plane as a base.
In a right cone, the height meets the base at its center.

The vertex is
Height directly above
the center of the
Lateral circle.
Surface
Slant
Height

r
Base
r
The height of a cone is the perpendicular distance
between the vertex and the base.
The slant height of a cone is the distance between the
vertex and a point on the base edge.
The lateral surface of a cone is actually a
circular sector withe the following
measurement.

## Length of the radius : slant height

Length of the arc : 2 r (circumference of
the base)
How to find the formula surface area of cone
Lateral surface area Length of arc
=
Area of cones base circumference of cones base

s 2 2s

## Lateral surface area = s 2 X 2 r

2s
Lateral surface area = sr
Once we know the lateral surface area, we can obtain the
formula ofthe total surface area of a cone
Total surface area = area of the base + lateral surface
area
= r 2 + s r
= r ( r+s)
the formulas of a cone are :
Lateral surface area =sr
Total surface area = r 2 + s r
or r ( r+s)
Example 1 :
Given :
4
Slant height : 6cm
=
6 3.14

## Ask : find the surface area of cone?

Answer : surface area = r 2 + s r
= 3.14 x 4 x 4 + 3.14 x 6 x 4
= 3.14 x 16 + 3.14 x 24
= 50.24 + 75.36
= 125.6 cm
Example 2 :
Given :

s
5cm

12cm

## Ask : find the lateral area and surface area! ( = 3.14)

s2 = r2 + t2
= 12 2 + 5 2
= 144 + 25
= 169
s 2 = 169
s = 13
lateral surface area= rs
=3.14 x 12 x13
= 489.84 cm2
Surface area = r 2 + s r
= 3.14 x 12 x 12 + 3.14 x 13 x 12
= 452.16 + 489.84
= 942 cm2
Example 1 :
Given : = 3.14

Example 2 :
Given : r : 5cm
h : 12 cm
= 3.14
