STEREOLITHOGRAPHY(SLA)
SLA also known as stereo lithography apparatus, optical fabrication, photo
solidification, or resin printing
SLA is a form of 3D printing technology
SLA used for creating models, prototypes,
patterns, and production parts in a layer by layer fashion using photo
polymerization ( a process by which light causes chains of molecules
to link, forming polymers)
PROCESS OF SLA
HISTORY OF SLA

The word is a portmanteau of the Greek words"stereon" (solid), "lithos" (stone) and "graphy" (writing).
Also known as additive manufacturing (a method of Rapid Prototyping)
The technology first appeared as early as the 1970s
Japanese researcher Dr. Hideo Kodama first invented the modern layered approach to stereo
lithography by using ultraviolet light to cure photosensitive polymers
However, the term stereo lithography was coined in 1986 by Chuck Hull. Chuck Hull patented stereo
lithography as a method of creating 3Dobjects by successively "printing" thin layers of an object using
a medium curable by ultraviolet light, starting from the bottom layer to the top layer
HOW DO WE PERFORM SLA PROCESS

SLA is rapid prototyping process used to create parts from 3D CAD data
SLA is highly accurate additive manufacturing process
It may also be referred to as rapid prototyping 3D Printing
SLA process begins when CAD data is sliced in layers as shown in figure
PROCEDURE
This data is transferred into SLA additive manufacturing system containing a vat of UV-curable
Photopolymer

The begins to build the part one layer at a time

Each layer is constructed from UV laser that is directed by X and Y
Scanning mirrors
PROCEDURE
As laser traces the cross-section on surfaces of the resin, the liquid material is hardened on contact

Once a layer is complete, the build platform is indexed down to make room for the next layer
A recoater blade moves across the surface ensuring a thin layer of fresh liquid resin is evenly spread over
the object
The laser continues to trace and form each layer atop the previous layer, building from the bottom up
PROCEDURE
The completed part is then carefully removed from the liquid and separated from the platform

A chemical bath removes excess resin and the part is cured in an UV oven
Any supported structures are also removed at this time
With numerous hand sanding and professional paint options available through service provide
APPLICATIONS OF SLA
1-Industry Specific Applications
Stereo lithography extends its solution to many industries as being the best form of prototyping and
product analysis. Specifically the material selection provides high-temperature and high durability options
for those industries dealing with high product standards.

2-Direct Digital Manufacturing

Print your model straight from a CAD file. Industries like the medical, electronic, packaging and defense
(to name a few) all use DDM as an SLA application.
APPLICATIONS OF SLA
3-Rapid Prototypes/Manufacturing
Design appearance models, proof of concept prototypes, form and fit, design verification, wind tunnel testing
(NDT), force testing (gravity, temperature, drops, shock, etc.) all use SLA technologies to rapid prototype their
ideas from paper to CAD file to working model. Stereo lithography helps you with your product design
lifecycle/process.

4-Injection Molding and Metal Casting

3D Prototypes created by stereo lithography are now strong enough to be machined and can be used as master
patterns for injection molding and even metal casting processes. Being cost and time effective in comparison to
molding and tooling.

Other applications are in

1. Medical
2. Automotive
3. Entertainment
4. Aerospace
5. Consumer products
Why SLA
1. High accuracy
2. high surface quality

3. Small & large parts from small Pin to car dash board.
