The indus basin

Indus Basin is a very developed watershed in that it

has a lot of storage and management infrastructure.
The schematic diagram below shows the major
rivers, canals, dams and other works of the Indus
Basin irrigation system. Tarbela, Mangla
and Chashma are the three primary reservoirs on
this system. Tarbela is the first regulation device on
the Indus and Pakistan largest storage device with
10.93 billion cubic meters of storage capacity.
Map of ibis structure in Pakistan
Water ability of ibis

Following are main source of water availibilty of ibis.

1. Ground water
2. Surface water
3. Rain water
Economic impact of ibis

The agricultural produce, in addition to providing

food security constitutes:
1. 23 percent of GDP
2. 70 percent of total export earnings
3. 54 percent employment of labour force
Hydraulic structures

A hydraulic structure is
a structure submerged or partially submerged
in any body of water, which disrupts the natural
flow of water. They can be used to divert,
disrupt or completely stop the flow.
Barrages

An artificial barrier across a river or estuary to

prevent flooding, aid irrigation or navigation, or to
generate electricity by tidal power.
Barrages and its off taking canals

Following are the barrages and its off taking canal.

Barrages in Pakistan

Following are the major barrages in Pakistan,

1. Chashma barrage
2. Guddu barrage
3. Jinnah barrage
4. Kotri barrage
5. Sukkur barrage
6. Taunsa barrage
Chashma barrage

chashma Barrage was constructed in 1971 on the River Indus

near the village of Chashma, about 35 miles downstream of
Jinnah Barrage. It was constructed to divert the water
released from Tarbela into River Jhelum through the
Chashma-Jhelum Link Canal, which has a capacity of
21,700 cusecs.
The river valley at chashma is 6.5 miles wide. The barrage is
3,536 feet long with 3,120 feet of clear waterway and with a
maximum design discharge of 1.1 million cusecs. The total
designed withdrawal for canals is 26,700 cusecs.

cusecs. The barrage has 44 bays, each 60 feet wide.
The length of the left and right guide bank is 6,000
ft. The maximum flood level height of Kotri barrage
is 43.1 feet.
Kotri Barrage was constructed to irrigate pulleli,
Pinjari and akram wah canals through lined channels
and enhance agriculture in the lower Sindh.
Kotri barrage
Sukkur barrage

Sukkur Barrage was constructed in 1932 on River

Indus. It is among the few large barrages in the
world, and has a maximum design discharge of 1.5
million cusecs.

Key facts about barrages
Dam

A barrier constructed to hold back water and raise its

level, forming a reservoir used to generate electricity
or as a water supply.
Continue

Ibis consist of construction of two main dams ,

the Mangla dam built on the jhelum river and
the Tarbela dam constructed on the Indus River,
together with their subsidiary dams.
Tarbela dam

Tarbela dam is an earth fill dam located on

the indus river in pakistan.it's the largest earth-
filled dam in the world and fifth-largest by
structural volume. It is named after the
town Tarbela, in KPK, about 50 kilometres (31 mi)
northwest of Islamabad.
continue

The reservoir is 80.5 km long and 260 square

kilometers in area and has a gross storage capacity of
11.6 MAF with a live storage capacity of 9.7 MAF
.The total catchment area above Tarbela is spread
over 168,000 sq. kilometers)which largely brings in
snow melt supplied in addition to some monsoon
rains.
The total power generating capacity of Tarbela dam
is 3478MW.
Mangla dam

The Mangla dam is the twelfth largest dam in the

world. It was constructed in 1967 across the jhelum
river,about 67 miles (100 km) south-east of the
Pakistani capital,Islamabad in[dadyal
Mirpur]district of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan.
continue

The main structure of the dam consist of two

spillways, four embankment dams, five power-
irrigation tunnels and 1,000 Megawatt power
stations. The dams two spillways are on its right
side. Normal service capacity of the main spillway is
900,000 cusecs. It consists of nine gates all are 36
feet wide and 40 feet high. The second spillway is an
emergency spillway. The design of this emergency
spillway supports for an expansion of 48 feet in
height in future.
