The education was a success. The students learned how to properly take care of their mouth. They also
learned how oral hygiene plays a role in cavities. With the education that we provide to the kids along with
the fluoride program, decay rates have decreased.
Recommendations
We have learned from past students that breaking the classes up is the best way for education purposes.
Also keeping the presentations short and sweet kept them on task instead of allowing for them to lose focus
At Risk Population
To inform at risk populations about the dangers of drinks containing fermentable sugars
To teach them about how acid attacks (whether frequent or prolonged) cause dental decay
Explaining acid attacks in more colloquial terms. Describing it as a feeding the bacteria that cause cavities
and making the tooth soft and easily broken down.
Explaining that long periods of sipping sugary or acidic beverages are more likely to cause decay
Explaining what these beverages are. I.e, not just soda, but also sports drinks, energy drinks, and fruit
juices.
Explain that these drinks are best consumed with meals, and that water is a neutralizer that will help prevent
dental decay.
