Purpose
To get all 10 guys to be at the l.o.s., running
full speed as the kicker makes contact with
the ball.
Two ways to adjust if it isnt perfect:
1. Moving up or back
2. Timing up; leaving earlier or late

7
KICKOFF CORNER KICK WITH HINGE COVERAGE

Objective:
To kick the ball between the goal line and ten yard line on the
numbers and pin the returner between the two gates and the
sideline (corner)
Each athlete is numbered from 1-10 from right to left not counting
the kicker
10,9,8,7,6,5,K,4,3,2,1 (can be changed up to disguise athletes and
confuse returners vs. a man crossing system)
1 and 10 are contained
K and 5 are safeties
2,3 and 4 are the right gate; Keeping everything inside of them
7,8 and 9 are the left gate; Keeping everything inside of them
6 is the hinge, straight to the ball

9
KICKOFF RETURN - ALIGNMENTS
5-4-2
Front Line
49 Yard Line, always expecting onside kick.
Center sets the front wall ON the hash and leads straight up the hash until
contact is made with first threat.
Yard line will vary depending on scouting report of opposing kicker however,
general rule of thumb is the 35 yard line
Middle Line
All four of the middle line guys must have good hands to handle squib
kicks and pooch kicks
Two full backs evenly spaced inside the hashes again depending on
scouting report, general starting point is the 30 yard line
The full backs will set the back wall 15 yards in front of the ball
Two wing backs are lined up five yards deeper than the fullbacks just
inside the numbers
Returners
Hashes; Depth will depend on scouting report

10
KICKOFF RETURN GROUP WORK
Front/Middle Lines
First drill is one on one to the hash, chopping feet,
locking on and widening
Front/Middle Lines
Second drill is the same except the entire group goes
together working on getting shoulder to shoulder
while chopping feet
Returners
Two ball drill
Communication (you/me, middle of field, and Go)

11
KICKOFF RETURN REPS
Putting it all together
We will return it to the near hash
If the ball is kicked straight down the middle we will have a
pre-determined call for these kicks. (home/away, middle or
left/right)
If the ball is kicked outside the hash we return it up the
hash. We never set the wall/return outside the hash
We work all scenarios
Left, Right and Middle Deep Kicks
Pooch Kicks
Squibb Kicks
Surprise Onside Kicks

PUNT RETURN - TECHNIQUES
RETURN
If a team is able and trying to punt away from our returner we put two
returners deep.
If they are punting to us we will use one returner and use extra man to
double team the punt teams best cover guy.
We will align every guy head up, man for man. The LB takes the
center.
The formation will dictate the direction of the return.
Example: Double wing/Pro Style Punt we will pound and pin everything
inside and return it outside (hash/numbers/sideline)
PARTIAL BLOCK WITH RETURN
We will always have a return set up if block doesnt occur.
Example: (Block Right) We will bring the pressure from the right side. They
will loop around to the left. The left side will all pound and pin inside and we
will attempt to return the punt left.
