Definition
MMS is an enhanced version of SMS. While SMS allowed you to send
across only Text and perhaps some text based images,

MMS allows you to run your imagination wild, one can attach:

1. Pictures/Images
2. Photographs
3. Video Clips
4. Sound Clips
5. Animations
6. Ring tones
7. Text

A MMS can consist any or all of the above or any components in any
combination. It is a synchronised PowerPoint Presentation
 MMS can be sent to

General perception is that it can be exchanged between Airtel to Airtel

only.

But in practicality it can be sent to any Mobile Number

across any Network, but the reception of the content will
differ based upon certain characteristics.

The following will explain this concept completely

A MMS can be sent from a MMS compatible handset (Airtel

Subscriber) to a MMS compatible handset (Airtel Subscriber)
only

i.e. If a customer clicks a picture and wants the other party

to view it in the exact way that he/she has sent it,
both parties have to be Airtel Subscribers with a MMS compatible
handset.
 Legacy

For a customer to fall in the Legacy category he needs to fulfil all the
Following Three conditions

Airtel prepaid/post-paid connection.

MMS enabled handset

MMS should be active in his/her account

 Legacy Contd.

If any one of the above conditions it not fulfilled, the customer

falls into the Non-Legacy category

** Thisdoes not mean that a Non-Legacy category customer will not

receive an MMS, he/she surely will receive it, but instead of getting
the actual content the Non-Legacy party will get a SMS containing
a URL, a Username and a Password

That party will have to visit that URL from a PC, enter the
username and Password and view what MMS content had been sent
to him/her

An Example

If an Airtel Post-paid customer using Nokia-6230

handset and having MMS active on Switch sends a MMS to another
Airtel Post-paid customer who is using Nokia-6260 handset and
having MMS active on Switch, the receiving party will be able to
view the MMS exactly in the way it was sent.

If in the above scenario the receiving party would have been a Non
Airtel customer then he/she would receive a SMS containing a URL, a
Username and a Password
 MMS can be sent to

Mobile Number

E-mail address (A MMS will be sent to the Inbox of that email

id)

Note: If the receiver tries and replies to the email, it will not be sent back
on the handset, we do not have such a facility as of now

Download sites for MMS

MMS cannot be downloaded from any website except from www.airtel.in

A customer can visit this site and download a variety of Pictures, Images,
Wallpapers etc..

This facility is possible only when a customers MMS is active at Switch.

 Activation Process

By Calling 121

Saving the setting (In case of handsets not compatible to OTA,

manual settings are explained to the customer)

Once the settings are received and saved the customer

has to restart his handset and initiate or send a MMS to any
number.

Only when a MMS is initiated customer gets registered on

our MMSC and his service gets completely activated.

Now customer is ready to send and receive MMS.

 Size Of A MMS

Theoretically MMS of more than 100KB cannot be sent

Practically MMS of about 250KB is sent easily

Commitment to customers only 100KB

To send MMS message : Rs. 5/- per msg

To download MMS from Net: Rs. 10/- per msg

National Roaming can be used across all Airtel networks

International Roaming it can be used in 41 Networks and 23 Countries

Mobile Office is a service over GPRS, which allows a user to

Access Internet on a GPRS compatible handset (WAP)

Connect handset to a PC/Laptop and use the handset as a

Modem and surf Internet on PC (PC Connectivity)

Airtel offers a user to browse all WML sites on the handset

General perception with customers is that they can open up

any site from their handset and expect it to look the same way
as it looks on a PC

This is not the case though; the following slides will help
understand it better

All sites that open up on a PC are configured on a language

Hyper Text Mark-up Language (HTML).

This language enables a Web Page to be created with Hyper links

A Hyper-link is basically a shortcut to some other Web page.

E.g. On a Yahoo page if you click on the envelope Icon it takes you to
your Mail Inbox, so the Icon is acting as a link to your Inbox

HTML sites are a lot more colour full, with images etc

Enables enhanced surfing experience with Icons that act as Hyperlinks

This interaction is known as GUI (Graphical User Interface)

The above however is not applicable when it comes to surfing from a handset.

GPRS handset does not understand HTML; hence

Web sites created using HTML do not open on GPRS handset

To view a site on a GPRS handset, it should be created in a language known as

Wireless Mark-up Language (WML)
 WAP Contd.

WML does not allow graphical representation as in the case of HTML

A typical WML site will have a lot of Text or perhaps some simple images

Will not be as flashy as a HTML site

The content on a HTML version and WML version of the site will almost be
the same but the presentation will be different.

Such an interaction with more text and characters known as CUI

(Character User Interface).

Only those sites, created on the WML platform can be opened on a GPRS
handset

Creating a WML version of a site is the Site Owners option

and if they do not have it that does not mean it is a problem from Airtel.
 Identifying WML

There are many HTML and WML sites, keeping a track of all WML
sites is difficult

The best option for a customer is to visit that site from a PC and
then go to the Contact us or Support option

Customer then needs to request the service provider whether the

site is WML compatible or WAP enabled

Note:
Generally if a site is HTML as well as WML enabled it has the same
URL
But in some cases the URL for a HTML site and WML site may be
different

 PC Connectivity

Customer can connect handset to PC/Laptop/Palmtop/PDA etc

and surf the Internet using handset as a Modem

Costly proposition as compared to Airtels per month Rs.199/- (prorate)

 Mode of Connectivity

Handsets provide three Modes of Connectivity

1. Data Cable
2. Infra Red
3. Bluetooth

A GPRS handset might have any or all of the above or

perhaps only two of the above.

Data Cable

A Data Cable is a physical wire or cord, one end of which goes into
the handset and the other end goes into the PC/Laptop

Infra Red (IR)

Infra red usees Infrared waves

Requires to be alignment all the time with partnered devices

Connection has to be re-established if the link is interrupted

Creating a link of infrared is as simple as aligning the ports of two devices

Most phones and laptops comes with a built-in IR ports

Laptop/Pc without built-in IR, one can use it by installing a external IR port

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is an enhanced version of IR however, with more flexibility

Bluetooth does not requires alignment

If connected works between 10-15 metres with other devices

To connect using Bluetooth, one of the device will have to search for the
other and pair up to stay connected, using the phone or laptops Bluetooth
menu

Laptop/Pc without built-in Bluetooth, one can use it by installing a external

IR port
 Installation of Modem Drivers Contd.

This is the second step of getting connected to PC/Laptop

It enables the PC/Laptop use the new connected device as a modem.

Modem drivers can be installed using the CD, available with GPRS phone

Download the drivers from the handsets website if the CD is unavailable

Points to remember

Drivers are brand specific and handset model number specific.

E.g. Nokia 6610s modem drivers would not work with a 3650 and vice versa

Modem drivers should be specific to the Mode of Connectivity

 Creating a Dial-up

Steps to create a dial-up

Go to Start menu select Settings Network and Dial-up Connection

Make New Connection

After Completing the previous step a Connection Wizard will open up

The customer now needs to keep pressing NEXT till he/she come
at the below mentioned Wizard Window where he/she would be
required to enter PHONE NUMBER as *99#

name the Connection and also needs to select the option of
creating a Shortcut of the same on desktop
