Gardners Multiple Intelligences
Goals:
By the end of the lesson, the students will know how to
read and create a map as well as know the geographic
locations of important places in Illinois.

Objectives:
Content/Knowledge:
Students will read maps and identify what is essential to
being able to read a map.

Process/Skills:
Students will create maps of Illinois, their town, and their
schools playground.

Values/Dispositions:
Students will write about what is important to them and
how it could benefit the people around them.

Rationale:
This lesson is important because students need to know
how to read maps as well as create them. It also teaches
them about Illinois and their hometown.

Standards:
State Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards
SS.G.1.6-8.LC: Use geographic representations (maps,
photographs, satellite images, etc) to explain the
relationships between the locations (places and regions)
and changes in their environment.

Students will make a to-scale map of their


town and 10 major landmarks in their town,
including their house and the school.
Materials: Paper, markers, rulers

Students will watch The Geography Song on


YouTube and will create their own song about
the geography of Illinois. After they make their
song, they will record themselves singing it
on a video recorder.

Students will watch The Geography Song on


YouTube and will create their own song about
the geography of Illinois. After they make their

Students will make a to-scale map of their

it to cardboard. They will then cut it up so that
it becomes a puzzle. The other students in
their group will try to put together the puzzle
and find where their city is on the map.

Students will go outside and make a map that


includes two of their favorite places on the
playground and two of their classmates
favorite places on the playground. They will
write about why these are their favorite places
and why other people could enjoy them, as
well.

Visual Learning, Assessment, and Online Resources:
Visual Learning: Students have lots of visual
learning because of the extensive use of maps in this
lesson as well as the geography video.
Assessment:
1. Students will be assessed based on the completion
of their assigned task and demonstrating
understanding by the explanation of their
assignments.
