Introduction
As the world continues revolving and adapting on its new
era, change is the only thing that remains constant. The
people living in the world are one of the key factors
responsible for the change not only within the
environment but also towards personal characteristics,
attitudes, behaviors, and gender preferences. In the past
few years, the acceptance of the LGBTQI (lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, queer, intersexual) community has
been one of the most controversial and most sensitive
issue. As time goes by, members of the LGBTQI
community start to embrace themselves and advocate for
their rights and gender equality.

Introduction

Sexual orientation and gender identity diversity are sometimes

labeled as one of the tough, emotional, and uncomfortable issues in
workplace diversity. Being uncomfortable is a common reaction
when confronted with what is unfamiliar and recognized as unsafe,
risky, or breaking stereotypical social norms. Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender workers are a minority for whom sexual
orientation, gender expression and/or gender identity are everyday
considerations. For gender conforming employees, these aspects of
personal identity are often deeply assumed, never questioned.

Introduction
Acquiring gay rights led to sprouting of different Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender organizations in America. As one of the
most powerful countries in the world, these movement have
spread all over the world and influenced different continents like
Asia. As each generations pass, more and more people are having
an identity crisis and are seem to be gender-confused. In line with
this, LGBTQI community expanded their reach by organizing
different talks and seminars, building support groups, providing
funds for the less fortunate LGBTQI community all over the
world.

Introduction
In the Philippines, gender non-conformity pre-dates the arrival
of the Spaniards in 1521.Meanwhile, it was said that during the
1960s that the gay culture have started. Gay men were using the
gay lingo (swardspeak/gayspeak/baklese) as their primary
language and form of communication. Prevailing LGBTQI
concepts have been greatly influenced by international media as
well as local reinterpretations of LGBTQI people who spent time
overseas. Moreover, an important turning point for lesbian
activism in the Philippines was when a lesbian contingent, called
Lesbian Collective, joined the International Womens Day march
in March 1992. This was the first demonstration attended by an
organized sector of the LGBT community in the Philippines.

Introduction
To cohesively understand the LGBTQI community in the
Philippines, understanding concepts of gender is necessary
for everyone. As the population of the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex community gets
larger, number of problems arises through years. In this
study, we will focus on the problems and mishaps that the
LGBTQI community experiences in their workplace and
their effects toward their job performance and job
acquisition as call center agents or BPO (business process
outsourcing).

Emilio Aguinaldo College - Cavite School of Physical Therapy

Background of the Study
The community was previously known as LGBT and was
later changed to LGBTQI for the inclusion of other gender
preferences with the addition of the letters Q for Queer and
I for Intersex. With the numerous bills that were proposed
for the protection of their rights, discrimination in health and
employment is still evident for those who identify themselves
as LGBTQI and are predisposed to limited and biased access
to health, and prejudice in seeking and during employment
due to social stigma. Efforts towards providing more
inclusive health programs have only begun in the recent years
and existing policies are yet to protect their rights entirely.

Background of the Study

Occupational therapy as a profession provides treatment to

wide array of patients from Pediatrics to Geriatrics, in Physical
Dysfunction and Psychiatric settings. Moreover, it is an
evidence-based profession which adapt through the changes not
only in the medical field but with other areas as well to improve
the quality and scope of service delivery. With the steady
increase in the population of LGBTQI in the Philippines over
the past few years, it is timely to prepare for the increase of
LGBTQI patients which will require OT services in the future.

Emilio Aguinaldo College - Cavite School of Physical Therapy

Background of the Study
The study came into focus due to the steady increase of
LGBTQI, specifically young adults, in the Philippines and
the discrimination the community face when it comes job
acquisition and job performance thus leading to the difficulty
in Work, as an area of occupation. As OTs, it is beneficial to
know the several factors which contribute to the barriers and
supports affecting their work in order to adapt the treatment
to effectively address these problems and improve their
participation in this occupation.

Scope and Limitations

There is lack of data as to the exact demographics of the LGBTQI

community in Pasay BPO industries. Related studies and data used
were US-based thus, context and certain factors may differ or may
not be applicable in the Philippine setting. The respondents are only
limited to the young adult group with an age range of 20 to 40 years
old of LGBTQI in selected BPOs in Pasay City.

Scope and Limitations
The limited number of respondents in the workplaces may be
insufficient and not be able to completely address the young
adult BPO workers that make up the LGBTQI community. The
target population size is yet to be determined since there is no
census regarding the demographics of the employees which
identify as LGBTQI. This will only be quantified through the
survey forms and may lack representation of the entirety of the
young LGBTQI adults working in the BPO industry.

Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework explains the root of the problem

for job acquisition and performance of young adult
LGBTQI workers which is caused by the types of
workplace discrimination that eventually leads to personal,
social and environmental barriers that also make rise to
support systems to be identified that would help improve
the job performance.

Research Design
The researchers used a cross sectional design to analyze the
data collected from the BPO workers at a specific point in
time.
The study is quantitative utilizing the likert scale survey forms as
the research instrument used for data gathering from the selected
BPOs to achieve the research objectives such as identifying the
types of workplace discrimination experienced by the working
LGBTQI young adults which affects their job performance and
overall wellbeing. The likert scale survey forms were modified and
drafted in a clear and concise manner to prevent confusion among
the respondents.

The gender sensitivity regarding the research can be offensive or
intrusive for the respondents so the researchers avoided the
problems that may arise regarding these by giving an informed
consent. The informed consent was submitted to the
Administration office of each company. The participants of the
study were also given informed consents, demographic data sheets
and were asked to list down their email addresses and contact
numbers. The contact details are necessary for sending the link of
the survey because the survey will be answered online through
Google forms. The participants are given a week to complete
the survey form.
